I have a wireless network which has a Samsung TV connected to it. For quite some time now whenever I wanted to watch an .avi file on the tv all I've had to do is right click on the file and an option "play to" would pop up which would then list the tv and viola we were watching.

Now for the problem. What we are watching now occasionally is in Spanish (which we don't speak). Now the .avi files that I have came with .sub files which I can unpack and play in VLC and turn on the subtitles so we know what they heck they are saying.

What I'm trying to figure out is if there is a way to stream what VLC or some other program is playing to the television this way we can see the subtitles.

    Any thoughts?

Are you sure it won't work the way you have it? Did you attempt to turn on subtitles using your TV remote? I went to the Samsung website and it says that Allshare supports the .sub subtitle format. Now, not knowing any more details than what you gave I can only speculate on what TV you have and what it supports...

Oh, and a viola is a large violin not the French interjection ;)

I just use an HD-MI cable between the comp and the tv. Just puts the comp screen on the tv. Subs added, and you just switch vlc into fullscreen.

I will have to scour the samsung site as I can't figure out how to do it.

I would need a 60 foot HDMI cable and I have a feeling the wife won't like it snaking throughout the house :)

Also a 60 foot cable would probably cost you $100. What's the deal with cable fraud anyway?

Put it on a DVD/USB key and play via your Blu-ray player?

While a workable solution it isn't really what I want to do. I would have to use software to make an iso using the .avi and the .sub and then burn it to the plastic. This would take time and waste dvds which I would then just throw away. A USB may make more sense, but then I still have to go through the effort of making the .iso

I think I saw the software/app that BTA was talking about. I will have to give it a shot.

They sell rewritable DVDs, you know... you can re-burn one a few hundred times. And you don't need to make any isos with USB keys, they've already got a file system so you just copy files over, stick the key in the player and play. Doesn't get much easier than that.

The All Share software is a winner. It enables me to stream just about anything to the tv over the wireless. It even works with .mkv files which I couldn't send using Windows. The only drawback is that it only uses .srt files and not .sub. However, not a problem as I knew how to convert .sub to .srt

The ability to stream .mkv files means I can now stream blue ray rips. Teen Snook is now trying to find a 3D .mkv to see if that will work.

I hope it all works as you expect. :) I'm surprised to hear it doesn't support .sub since the page I looked at listed that format as supported...

I'm not sure what page you were looking at, but I chatted with tech support and they confirmed that it only works with .srt.

I agree, that is kind of stupid.

Hm. This is where I found it, but looking again that's a version from 2009, and the 2011-2012 version doesn't contain any subtitle information. Weird.
