Is there an argument for Sebastian being useful?

    His armor looks cool?

I don't know really. You should be able to get through the game with any followers really, as it isn't that difficult. So I guess it mainly comes down to personal preference.

I recall using archer heavy groups against some tougher fights such as dragons, and once used Varric and Sebastion together, with my mage healing/freezing and Aveline (IIRC) tanking. This is because the dragon had so many AoE attacks, that is was just more sensible to keep most of my group at a distance.

I had zero trouble with the fights in the game anyway, so Sebastian fit in nicely. Just click the "awsome" button as fast as you can, and you win easily.

True but he's whiny so Varric still wins

All companions in DAII are useful. I rotate them for each quest as it adds to the game as you get to hear them interact. I find Varric and Isabella the most enjoyable when paired with Sebetian. They toture the poor lad with questions about his virginity.

My favorite character that I do not romance is Varric.
