I guess phone snobbery isn't any different from any other kind of snobbery. While you may be correct that your choices are superior in various ways, if people are happy with the choices they've made, they probably won't care. And, as is often the case with snobbery, your condescension (half-joking though it may be) isn't making me want reconsider my choices.

Though I'm sure your HTC phone is 90 times faster, prettier, sleeker, smells like pie and reaches out with a tiny hand to tickle your balls every few hours, I'm perfectly happy with my iPhone4. I did a lot of research before buying it. I also waited until the 4 came out since, as you mentioned Barmy, the first 2 versions of the iPhone weren't all that spectacular and I knew several early-adopters* who were unhappy. Since I'm an art director I do most of my computing on a Mac, and most of my friends have iPhones as well (so we can compare and share apps, etc.). Compatibility is simple. This is the only phone I've ever had that I've never had a single dropped call or inconvenient issue of any kind. It's light, works well, the retina display is stunning, and thanks to all the features and apps (calendar, texting, email, iPod, video, video chat, games) and how well they are designed, for the first time in my life I'm actually very organized and content (a relief after years of failed attempts at traditional day planners). In short, it's the single most useful device I've ever owned. And though I'm sure other phones can do all the things I just listed, as I said, I don't really care. I like what I have.

If buying what works the best for ME after careful consideration makes me a sheep, then, well...ba-a-a-ah.

    * These are the real "sheep." Anyone who buys the first version of a new product the day it comes out is asking for trouble.

Barmy - Quit being a dick. I know how much I paid for the phone and the link I posted works just fine and displays a price of 199.00. You can call me a liar all you want, but it doesn't change the price. As for the contract, yes there is a contract, but so what? I need the service to go with the phone.

Some people are just allergic to Apples. Kitrax was one, and Barmy Army is clearly another. If you're allergic to Apples, then you can't use them - simple as that.

I couldn't care less if you like it - it's still rubbish. Like it all you want, go to bed with it and stroke the little apple on the back until you both drift off to sleep and have wet dreams together about each other - it won't change the fact it's a rubbish phone. That's just how it is, and it's not opinion. By continuing to buy their products, despite their obvious shortfalls, people are just playing right into Apples marketing strategy. Like I say though, they are starting to lose ground fast, it just took a while for your every day person to realise there are better options out there. Apple are responding by packing the iPhone 5 with some serious hardware, simply because they have to, but it's still got a really really bad OS, which is impossible to replace. It doesn't matter if you like it. I'm not arguing that you don't, and I'm happy that you're happy.

Sorry, I don't mean to be insulting, snobbish or condescending, but that's how I am so that's how it comes out.

    ---------- Added 0 hours, 2 minutes and 9 seconds later... ----------

No, the link doesn't work for me - a country issue? I just get their home page.

... and the extra cost for the phone is part of the cost of the contract. The phone, on it's own is £450+. Irrefutable fact that mate. Don't you have Pay As You Go in America?

Again, Barmy, if they were so "rubbish" they wouldn't sell or work as well as they do. Marketing to "sheep" only goes so far. I've had "rubbish" phones before. My wife went through 5 of them last year. 5. In a single year. I wouldn't keep a "rubbish" phone.

And yes, it is an opinion. It's your opinion. One I don't find compelling.

They sell well because they got the smartphone table first and established their name as pretty much the only one in that space (for quite a while, at that). Now that there are better phones, with better operating systems out there, they are losing ground & share. That's all I've said since the start. I wish it was on opinion - if you want, I can compare the iPhone 4 specs against my SGS2 specs, or even my old phone, the HTC HD2. Good hardware makes a good phone. I really don't know how else you can compare 2 things any other way. It works well for you and your wife, great, I'm happy for you. BUT the iPhone is not as good as other phones on the market that sell for comparable prices, that's all I've said. You've already agreed with me.

Someone turtling around town in a Mini Metro might love their Mini Metro. They might adore it to bits. That doesn't change the fact it's not as good as a Ferrari. I've never challenged that people shouldn't like whatever phone they have, all I've said is there are better.

    REALLY GUYS *exasperated*

No, that isn't what you said. You've said over and over it's "rubbish." No matter how much I like it I'm wrong because it's "rubbish." At no point did you say "the iPhone works, but HTC is better." At no point did I say that other phones are not superior to iPhones (in fact, I said the opposite). Just that the iPhone isn't "rubbish." THAT is your opinion. That other phones have superior hardware is a fact, I agree. That doesn't make the iPhone a piece of junk.

Barmy, everything you have said have only pushed me closer to getting myself an iphone. All the stuff you said you could do with your phone left me as big question mark. I had no idea what you were talking about. I am not a techie, I dont want to be a techie, I want something that works and that I can understand. Everything I have heard about iphones vs other is that especially the OS is superiour in Iphone, that it is intuitive and works while I have heard a long list of complaints about the OS in other smartphones and that from people who hate apple or even work with developing software for androids. All you've done here is to further convince me that non-Iphone smartphones are solely for computer engineers willing to spend hours and hours configuring and fiddling with their phones.

This is starting to remind me of the Red Hat/Linux fanatics who think Windows and/or Mac OSX are the downfall of intelligent civilization, all who use them are brainwashed consumerist zombies, and give off the "if they only KNEW how much BETTER this was!!" kind of lamenting. Who knows - they're probably right. But as Windows and OSX work fine enough for me not to want to learn a whole new operating system, I don't really care.

EDIT: HA!! 8Peeps beat me to it!

I have a HTC Wildfire and it makes me wish I had an iPhone instead, for software compatibility if nothing else.

Using an Android phone is like using Linux in the 90's - sure it's a lot more open, but boy are you getting nothing done unless you code your own tools.

Ah sod it lol. I'm fed up of arguing the toss with the wrong people.

[IMG] Just a small reminder to keep it civil and friendly... obviously this thread is a very hot topic (har har), but the jibes turn into insults very quickly so I hope that everyone got that out of their systems now and we can continue the discussion without resorting to any more name-calling or derision.

But seriously, modern Android phones are by no means 'techie' devices. I'm a total thicko and I can use one! Trust me Jao, if you want a good phone ask your local shop for the Samsung Galaxy S2. You won't be disappointed, even straight out of the box. And most apps on the Market are actually FREE (:O shock horror!).

:deadhorse: I still only paid 199.00 for it. What someone else pays for it is his/her deal. Sorry you only get the home page, but that's not what I'm getting. I guess the price is different in the UK than it is in the US, which may be why the link works differently. When I checked the Samsung the price was 549.00 for me, even with a contract. So as far as I'm concerned your phone is not nearly worth the extra $350.00.

When I sold PCs, and we were a big Apple dealer, we used to get Apple customers. They often sounded like cult members to us, because they were onto ONLY Apple and everything Apple. It used to make us laugh among ourselves.

The link doesn't show anything for me either, so it's probably cookied or tied to your login.

Edit: ah, figured it out, it's the ZIP wall. Punch in 35801 and it'll show you the offer.

Noooo you're not getting it. The cost for the phone is hidden as part of the contract. So what you actually pay for the phone can vary massively from free, to nearly full price, depending on your contract. I'm talking about buying the phone, just the phone, on it's own with a SIM free unlock. And like I've shown you, it costs a lot. Like, I got my SGS2 for free, but I am signed up to a contract, that doesn't mean the phone is free. My phone is the current best on the market in terms of what it is, has & does, and that won't change for about 6 months or so, after that it will be eclipsed by something else. The phone market moves and changes even faster than the PC market, it's scary fast. I love it.

    Pay. As. You. Go.

You buy the phone outright then add credit as and when you need it, instead of signing up to a contract. Never heard of it? Or are you being deliberately thick about this? Either way, you're breaking my spirit.
