Not sure if this really belongs in the alleys, but, knowing our members, better safe than sorry.

Kinda interesting to me, given the other things the pope has commented on recently (like condoms, etc.)

This pope seems a little more mainstream than his predecessors and also seems more interested in building bridges than pointing out differences. Not sure if that's truly what he wants/thinks, but I do find it a refreshing change.

Oh come on. About time. Catholic anti-semitism caused a lot of harm over the centuries. A pity it took them so long.

I never understood this arguement. I was raised Catholic, and I always was taught that a Roman, Pontius Pilate (I don't remember what his title was), presided over Jesus' trial and ordered his execution. Last I heard Jesus was a Jew. A rabbi in fact.

But setting all of that aside, how would Jews today, 2000 years after the fact, still be held accountable for something that happened so long ago? (Even if one is willing to ignore that collectively, the Jews at the time were not responsible for it in the first place?)

Glad you brought that up. I never understood that assertion either.

Yeah ... I mean - what? How through any logic could Jews be held collectively responsible?

I guess I don't really expect the Church to run on logic or anything though, and I guess if they did hold all Jews responsible at some point it's good that they're not doing it now.

The (twisted and completely wrong from every angle) logic is that the Jews, when calling out for Jesus' blood, said the guilt (which Pilate refused to take) would be on 'us and our children and our children's children'. Of course, Jesus kind of over-ruled that when He comanded His disciples to go first to the Jews with the Good News. All the disciples taught in the tabernacles first, and only later elsewhere.

I wish I could be Pope and go around making meaningless statements like this.

"I exonerate rats for causing the Black Death. It was the germs. Go now in peace."

I wish it was something like this: "I exonerate the Germans for the Holocaust"

It turns out that a current population cannot be held accountable for the actions of its ancestors. Odd that it took the pope 2000 years to realize that in this case.

Oh wait, he didn't even say that! If the Jews actually killed Jesus would he then have said this? Probably not, since the entire human race is apparently still marked with something our fruit-stealing ancestors did.

I'm pretty sure that along the way, there are a number of popes who realized this. It's probably just a matter of having the guts to admit it openly.

Well, I'm glad that at least this pope came out and said it.

I had no idea the pope was that old!

He is, he's sort of like Flemeth from Dragon Age. He just keeps taking new bodies. Don't mess with him.
