Does the clock strike twelve at the north pole whilst the bird's feather strikes one?

Depends if the penguins have feathers or furs.

Are we talking African or European penguins?

Actually, Australian penguins have been shown to fertilize more oboes than all the other breeds of penguins combined.

But does the Australian penguins run? You know, we might need them to run with Barmy.

I've only really kept one New Years resolution ever, to not cut my hair in 2010. As for this year I think it'll have to just be to actually start going to school again.

Y'know, this thread is right next to the babble thread. However, it actually isn't the random babble thread, so put the penguin bit where it belongs. Thanks.

    Why so serious?

On a related note, my resolutions are: not get behind on work (school and otherwise), have more fun this semester, and become a better people-person.

What about movies, Saber? Any new ones on deck?

    [edit]

Just read your random babble and got my answer, lol. ;)

Still running. Go me. I've usually knocked resolutions on the head by February!

My mate told me to try running with a bin liner under my clothes a few times. I decided to give it a go this morning (5k run straight after a 12 hour night shift, hardcore!) and I tell you what... you sweat like absolute blue ****!

Hah, no running done so far, partially because of a cold I had during most of January. But I started going to work by bike again, which I may have to stop again due to snow, and I bought new running shoes and a new high vis bike/running jacket.

Whatever I do, I have no more excuses to not run and to not use the bike in rain or darkness.

A bin-liner!? I know hundreds of runners and NONE of them run in a bin-liner. Sounds ridiculous.

What shoes are you running in?

Yeah, it just raises your body temperature and makes you sweat. Meant to be good for losing extra weight, but I don't know. I always thought sweat was just water, so as soon as you have a drink, any sweat is back on again.

Just some Adidas running trainers. I don't know the model or what have you, but they fit my feet snugly and don't hurt, so it's all good.

I don't understand that either. Sweating is only good for regulating body temperature (and releasing pheromones). Not for loosing weight. If people really have that much water in their body, they should eat less salt. Most overweight is caused by fat and that doesn't just vaporize in temperatures above 37 celsius (98 Fahrenheit).
I'm not a prof on biology, though.

It's good if you're after a heart attack or some other body shock due to overheating... not much else. Hint: you sweat so that your body cools down more efficiently by dissipating heat into the air. If you block the process by wrapping yourself up in a bag, your body can't cool down efficiently any more. The weight lost from the extra sweat you lose will be gained back as soon as you start rehydrating. Anyone who knows the basics of proper training will tell you that it's important that you rehydrate even during workouts, so this idea's really a total miss.

If you want to lose more weight during jogging, put on a filled backpack or torso/arm weights. That's actually going to work, but it'll get very hard and uncomfortable very quickly too. Check this.

As a kid, I played youth football, which was regulated by your weight. The coaches would put us in black plastic trash-bags about 2 hours before the game and have us run several laps around the field to lose the extra-weight inorder to make the weigh-in. It worked as a temporary weight loss tool. As soon as the weigh-in was over, they would pump us full of Gatorade and Chocolate bars so we had energy for the game itself. Now that I think back on it, I would like to kick each and every one of those knucklehead parents and coaches in the nuts, several times, for doing that to us kids. I'm sure that is not a very healthy exercise plan.

Heavy sweating (think of being in a sauna heated to at least 80 centigrades with several layers of clothing on as one option) can be used as a means to rapidly lose some weight temporarily. Lightweight rowing is one example where athletes might use it among other methods to clear the weight limit. But, as said, it is not something you should try if you want to lose extra weight.

    Edit: I am slow...

As per the other posters, I see zero point in running in a binliner....UNLESS....you're training for an event like the Honolulu Marathon and you're trying to get used to running in the heat.

I'm no expert with exercises but several years of backpacking tells me that running with weight is not the best option at all. I mean, it works BUT you are also putting your knees and ankle joints at risk to injuries. I personally would suggest running uphill (or inclined path) instead. The idea is to make you exert more and thus help in burning more fat. And like carrying weight, it still does make you stronger.

Or run faster. Or for longer. Some things really aren't that complicated.
