So the pertinent question here is: How many months of probation will the one with the ***** pass get?

Um....did we even read the same article? How exactly did this woman get a "***** pass?" She plead guilty to second degree murder, which sounds about right, and she faces the possibility of life in prison. If you're upset that you've found yet another woman who isn't facing the death penalty because of her "***** pass" (man, I wish you'd stop using that term), you can relax. The short answer is that, well, you haven't. Second degree murder isn't a capital crime in Florida, so her gender has nothing to do with the fact she isn't facing the death penalty. Her gender also has nothing to do with why she was charged with second instead of first degree murder. To charge someone with first degree murder you need evidence of a specific intent to kill, premeditation, and deliberation -- none of which are present in this case. She was charged with and plead guilty to the highest crime allowable, and she'll be sentenced accordingly. Your much vaunted "***** pass" couldn't even get her a plea bargain.

Possibility. Um, ok. How many months of probation do you think she'll get?

Zero. She's going to prison where she belongs. Legal analysts argue that she's more likely to get 25-50 than life, and that sounds fine.

I thought 25-50 years *was* life?

Either way, I'd be highly surprised if she even got 25 years. She'll probably cry on the stand, wave her ***** pass, and state that she was 'abused' and 'neglected' by her husband. Her child was male, so the courts probably won't care too much either. They'll probably think that the kid was just going to grow up to be a future abuser/rapist/deadbeat dad.

She's sentenced in December, so I'll be keeping my eye on this one.

She has plead guilty to the second degree murder charge. She will not have a jury trial. Her attorney may try to bring extenuating circumstances up to the judge but it is up to the judge to decide her prison sentence. I have no idea if Florida has mandatory sentences for the crime but I do not seeing her get probation.

A woman in Texas got 10 years of probation for first degree murder. It was her husband, of course.

    http://www.thehawkeye.com/print/Husband-murder-032509

Seems like the ***** pass is redeemable at any court in Texas. I'm not sure if they hate men and treasure women to the same degree in Florida.

Mordea, can you please for the love of God stop using this highly inflammatory and misogynistic term over and over again? It isn't "just" women that get light sentences from juries, and it isn't like this particular woman was let off with such a light sentence without any cause whatsoever. Maybe you don't like that a Texas jury saw the fact that Traci Rhodes was in an abusive and manipulative relationship as just cause for a lighter sentence -- and I don't like it, either -- but at least have the decency to avoid referring to women in such pejorative terms. It's crude, it's sexist, and it has nothing whatsoever to do with the Florida case being discussed in this thread. Grow up.

Why would I stop using the term, when it aptly describes the privileged treatment of women in Western societies?

I often play this fantastic game with news articles, called 'Reverse the Genders'. I replace 'female' with 'male' (or vice versa), and then determine whether the incident would be treated in the same manner by society.

Here's an example. Original extract from:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Winkler

Sound plausible? Gee, I wonder why not. Could it be because of... the ***** pass!

    How about this one?

*chortle* Sound plausible? No? ***** pass.

Mordea, I admit that I agree with you on the differentiated treatment between men and women. It specifically reminds me of that old rhyme my family used to always sing around Halloween... You know, the one about Lizzie Borden. (The evidence quite pointed toward her being the only one with motive and opportunity, the maid even placed her upstairs giggling around the time of her mother's death! She was let go free of charge, however.)

But digressing from that, the meaning of your phrase isn't being called into question; it's the conveyance. If you didn't know your father I could call you a dirty bastard, but it'd be just as accurate and much more appropriate to call you by your name.

What he said. Mordea, I have yet to deny that juries composed of both men and women are on occasion overly sympathetic to female criminals and in many cases give them a lighter sentence than they would otherwise deserve. It absolutely happens -- just not as often, as severely, or as systemically as you so bombastically insist that it does.

I'd further point out that this same phenomenon occurs with Caucasians regardless of gender. Study after study has found that white men and women overwhelmingly tend to get more lenient treatment than minorities with equivalent criminal backgrounds. We've found that the educated tend to be treated more leniently than the uneducated, that the rich are treated more leniently than the poor, and that the young are treated more leniently than the old. Where is your outrage every time a white guy gets a lighter sentence than a black guy, a rich guy pleas his way to a slap on the wrist while a poor guy rots, or a university professor that kills his wife gets a lighter sentence than the janitor that killed his?

I'm not arguing that there is no inequality in our legal system. There's tons of it, and it's obvious to even the most casual observer. I'm asking you to two different thing. First, stop calling women b****es. I can already hear your claims that you are doing nothing of the sort, but that is exactly what you do every time you invoke that abominable phrase. Think about it. You could have called it a "lady pass", an "ovary waiver," a "femininity discount," an "estrogen exception," or even "the Oprah's Book Club Special," but you went with b****. Why? If you aren't the kind of person that thinks it is perfectly appropriate to refer to women as b****es (and I really want to think that's true), you'll stop using turns of phrase like this. Even if you are the type of person that thinks it is perfectly appropriate, you should stop anyway.

Second, you should at least, you know, wait for sentencing before you start whining about the sentence. This is only common sense. In Florida, judges rather than juries decide on sentencing, so there's no real way for a jury to nullify its own verdict like it can in Texas. Even if juries did decide on sentencing, there's no reason to believe that two different juries composed of different sets of people will make the exact same sentencing decisions regarding the same case. They don't. Calm down, maybe do a little deep breathing, and wait for the sentence. If you keep getting worked up over nothing like this, it'll land you in an early grave. Check with your cardiologist if you don't believe me.

Um, folks, I think there has been quite a misunderstanding. I called it the 'kitten' pass, not the 'female dog' pass.

Here, read this: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=p ussy pass

You'll need to remove the space between the 'p' and the 'u'. I honestly don't know why this forum censors p ussy. Note that the term doesn't just apply to the legal arena, but also to other areas where a woman is shown preferential treatment.

Heh, I was wondering why you guys were over-acting more than usual. But then again, it was only really Drew who was whinging, and he's a 'kitten', so I didn't think too much was amiss (nah, just kidding dude, you're cool).

    Wait - I thought he was saying *****! ;)

I think you guys are sort of missing the point here. Right or wrong, mordea's objective is to be bombastic, to push buttons. Acknowledging it's effect only empowers him. If you don't care for his phrases (or whatever else), the best thing to do is ignore them. When you call attention to them, you're only asking for more, because now he knows his approach is working. :heh:

Ah. That makes it....not really any better. It's generally not accepted in polite company to refer to women as pussies either, which would be why this forum (usually) censors that word, too.

My reaction was that his wife or girl friend had left him and stolen the bank account and he was hunting around for anything to take his frustration out on.

I have made a lot of posts that had a preconception in them without resorthing to censored language. I have made them expecting and wanting various opinions. I then read the posts, each post, as carefully as i can. Sometimes I have my view point modified and sometimes I don't.

Now as I understand the situation with this woman she has pleade quility to the charge of 2nd degree murder. Therefore there will be no jury trial. A judge will sentence her based on the laws of Florida. This is a case of a woman killing her child because it was crying and interrupted her game, not even a very engrossing game at that. Neither men, women, juries or judges take kindly to this sort of thing.

This is not a case of a woman killing or maiming a man who has abused her for years. I have met and talked to women who have suffered abuse over the years, some from child hood, there is no comparison between their cases and the above case.

Wow, you *never* stop whining. And here I was expecting that you would be a little more humble, after you got all irate over a misinterpretation.

I didn't refer to women as 'pussies'. I stated that they had a 'p ussy' pass.

But never mind. Continue providing me with your tears of impotent rage. I always find it hilarious when white knights feel the need to defend innocent women from opinions. :D
