problem: slow game

    Never mind, the lag stopped "Poof!" when I picked up the wardstones. Sorry for not looking at that first.

    For anyone still playing ID2, there's a patch available for anyone with a Geforce 8000 and newer, who suffers from lag and graphical issues.

    No more black boxes and framerate slowdowns without having to disable directdraw, so no more scrolling issues and mouse flickering as well.

    It works for Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate 1, Icewind Dale 1 too.

    Had the same problem with an ATI HD graphic card and P4 3Ghz. Solution was in Display properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> Troubleshoot, and move the Hardware acceleration slider 3 positions to the left, where it reads "Disable all DirectDraw and Direct3D accelerations...". Now it works perfectly, without cursor flickering or other side effects.

    I've got an ATI HD card now and I tried the hardware acceleration thing but it didn't work. This game stutters all over the place and is basically unplayable for me. :(

    Here are my tips for improving IWD2 experience with Windows 7.

    Since Windows 7 does not allow DirectX hardware acceleration to be disabled, I have found two ways around this.

    1) By using Compatibility Administrator program (in Start, search box, type "compatibility" and it should appear, otherwise you may need to download it from Microsoft website. Then, under Custom databases, right click on a new database, and select Create new -> Application fix. Browse to IWD2 folder and select iwd2.exe file, and make sure in the further steps to check the "Force DirectDraw Emulation" box. This immediately improved the speed, but on my machine it still slowed down after some minutes into gameplay, so I applied the second solution.

    2) Download the latest DirectX SDK from Microsoft, and when installing, select only the DirectX Utilities (and Redist - required for tools). Then in Start -> SDK -> Utilites, open DirectX Control Panel. In there check "Software Only" under Direct3D tab, uncheck "Use Hardware Acceleration" under Direct Draw tab, click Advanced Settings and uncheck Use Hardware Blit, Use Hardware Transparency and User Hardware Color Fill. This worked best on my machine.

    Solution 1 is working just fine and without that vid I'd have missed to install it as well :D
    Just this horrible slow-down was the reason I stopped playing several times, cause after some minutes and really low spells it was quite unplayable...and only on win7.

    This might be the solution you're looking for.


    Like the rest have had the same issue regarding severe slowdown upon starting my IWD2 adventure, from the very beginning. I found out however, (atleast it worked for me), right click on desktop> NVidia Control Panel> manage 3d settings> program settings> select a program to customize> find the iwd2.exe.cutable> scroll down to the end of the list of settings details and you see vertical sync> change "use global settings" to "force off"> apply.

    This is ofcourse only on NVidia cards, but there should be a similar option on other gfx-cards, am I right?

    Actually it didn't go that swell, it was lagging the same way after I moved into a combat situation, but might do for another.

    I have never experienced any graphical artifacts in the game. However, transparency rendering is very slow. If I bring up several boxes of descriptive text on screen at the same time or cast dense area effect spells like Entangle, the performance becomes very sluggish. Changes in the Config, settings for Software Blt or disabling hardware acceleration in Windows have no effect. The game doesn't seem to have any acceleration for that aspect ever.

    I have watched a gameplay recording of IWD1 with the same effect. For me IWD works excellently under OpenGL, no matter how many transparent objects there are, and of course looking nicer without dithering. Why was OpenGL removed from the sequel during a time (2002) when most games had just implemented acceleration and it was perceived as modern and needed?

    This is not a solution to overall slow graphics. However, I was able to speed up my FPS by at least 3x when not in combat in this particular scenario. Sharing in case it helps someone.

    Context: I eventually found a lot of Cloaks of Displacement. All of them confer a blur visual effect on the wearer.
    I took off all the cloaks, and my FPS suddenly jumped up like nobody's business. Put them all back on, and I'm back to single digits.

    My fix: I used DLTCEP to remove the blur effect from the cloak. The modified itm file was saved into my override folder. Voila, FPS is back to normal. Having one or two party members with the cloak (with blur) is fine, but if say 4 of the party are wearing blur-effect items, the FPS drops to unbearable.

    Of course, (my) combat is still terribly slow because I tend to use a lot of lingering cloud spells and all those visual effects seem to be just not compatible with new graphics cards. I've tried everything mentioned in this thread and elsewhere on the internet but it's just the way it is.

    GemRB is an extremely promising project that has absolutely no FPS issues, but I'm not playing it because on my screen resolution (1280x800), the party moves a few spots away from where their circles indicate they should go. That sentence by itself doesn't make much sense... say if I move my fighter to x40 y40, he actually goes to x20 y20 (these are fictional numbers).
