    Yay! New babbling thread! [IMG]

Don't forget to start adding useless letters like "u" and "e" to words that shouldn't have them....like 'towne' or 'colour'. It's color god-damnit! [IMG]

The extra letters just make their language more flavourful and centred. Of course, my English colleagues love to tease me for forgetting my vowels. Those zany, mad-capped English, always up their antics....

In other news, just finished throwing a B-day party for my son who just turned 3. It was a very successful and enjoyable party. The food was excellent. The bounce house a particular hit with the kids. But it really amazes me that even when you try to plan something really small, it always ends up bigger than you planned, and much more expensive. I sort of lost track of the costs, but it was definitely north of $400.00 USD. Really? Just for a few families to hang out, eat some food, cake, and a few party favors? Oh well....

Hibernation was a failure. Too much sleep is scary.

Speaking of such gibberish...I've always wondered how the Engrish (and aussies) got Al-Oom-In-Ee-Um from 'aluminum'. They're adding an extra sound that doesn't belong. People, it's A-Loo-Mi-Num. I can understand words like La-Bor-A-Tory since it's not introducing any new sound, it's just breaking the word down in different sections.

Wait a minute...I'm Brit bashing here....where's Barmy?

Maybe because it's spelt "Aluminium", you fecking yank! :D

Edit: Oh, and if our language is too difficult for you to master, you can always come up with your own instead.

It was actually called aluminum first. When the element was discovered it was named alumium, but the discoverer (a Brit) changed it to aluminum some years later. Some British fellows decided however that it didn't sound posh enough and thought it should be named aluminium to keep consistency with the -ium suffixes, totally forgetting there were already elements like platinum.

Nothing like standing on the sideline and watching the UK and US bash the hell out of each other. :p

Weird thing is, I still use British spelling but my spoken English is more American than English. Probably because we learn British English in school but American English from TV.

Happy birthday to your little 'un Marceror! I know what you mean about it being expensive! Even though I did all the catering for Ashleys 3rd it still cost a fortune! We don't do party bags now though. Since I do the chocolate bars we use those. A friend of mine was really pleased when I did them for her daughter as she said that the party bags normally cost her about £3 each to make but my choccie bars only cost £1.20

A thread late, but anyway... you were probably not looking at the vB Blog FAQ, but even if you were, it's not very useful on the subject. Below the Sorcerer's Place Forum logo near the top of every forum page, there's a green Blogs link in the nav bar. Clicking it gives you several options. One of them is "Your Blog". If you click that, you'll be directed to the page where you can manage the various blog settings as well as post new blog entries. The navigation is on the left side of the page. You're looking for the "Post to your Blog" option.

The "How do I..." sticky in SS is a better place to ask such questions as I'm more likely to see them.

Two countries divided by a common language.

My spelling is British as American English just simplifies things too much for my taste. I also feel British accents definitely sound better to my ears (but there are exceptions).

ION I'm so busy it's not even funny. That and being sick when it's incredibly hot is no fun at all.

    In my dictionary...

aluminium n. Chiefly Brit. Variant of aluminum.

In the US the spelling 'aluminium' is primarily used by chemists when referring to the element. The spelling 'aluminum' is generally used in other industries when referring to the metal. The later is far more common in the US and so the the universal pronunciation here is based on the second spelling.

At least with both Aluminium and aluminum it's fairly clear what element it is.

Sodium and Potassium, otoh... (Natrijum and Kalijum are in use here)

I've learned the terms ten years ago and still catch myself thinking "Sodium? Ooooh, Na!"

Still - Uuq (Ununquadium) , anyone?

Temporary name and everyone just says element 114 but - Uuq? Catchy. :D
