Looks like I'll be traveling to the jolly green lands of England again in a couple of weeks for work. I love England -- err, the UK, as it seems to be called most often these days -- but I can't say as I'm fond of the time difference. And hopefully Eyjafjallajokull will behave herself this time.

    :coffee2:

Well, blimey, at least I'll get out for a pint or two, I'm sure. With a sport of luck, I'll even make it into London for Les Mis, as I had to cancel those plans last time around. Bonnie good luck then. Cherio guvnor!

(I have to practice speaking like an Englishman, you know, old bean)

    :D

Well, if England is a dump, I don't even want to know what that makes the USA. Our country is not nearly as green and lush (some parts are, but on the whole there's a distinct lack of green here, compared to England). We have no 300+ year old buildings with amazing history and personality. Our buildings are rather bland. No castles off in the distance that speak of another time. Last time I was in England I found myself feeling that in several ways my country was inferior. Sure, we're huge, powerful, rich... but we don't have much history, or green. So I guess that makes us a huge, powerful and rich uber-dump!

In terms of where I'll be most of the time, a town called Readding, which I believe is just off London.

    Marceror,
all that green, it has just not been developed yet because some pesky laws have zoned it as ... undevelopable. In the US it has been developed, since there is business to be made.

A while back I heard an interview with some apparently renowned American professor emeritus (iirc of economics), and at a point he went to line out differences in zoning between the US and the UK, and in his view the UK compared quite favourably. He called US development and zoning 'a race to the bottom' with lower and lower standards set in order to 'attract business'. The result is your American sprawl. That was a rather grumpy professor. Interesting interview.

If you're interested I can give you a link, but I'd need to search it first.

Sure, I find this stuff interesting, actually. When you watch a movie like Avatar, well, I think it's the Americans who take plenty of the blame for stripping the earth of green. I'm fortunate to live in a hilly area with plenty of green, which is connected to a national park. But it doesn't take me long at all to drive to the rat race is happening.

That said, sure, the USA would be a lot more green if it weren't for development, but we also have a lot of areas that are naturally just huge, open wastelands. When I drive from Southern CA to Northen CA, I'm amazed at how uneventful the view is for most of that drive. No raping of the natural world going on here. It's just what my state looks between the long stretch between LA and, say, Sacramento. But then you keep driving and find a jewel like Yosemite. So I guess it's not all bad.

... but then there is the point of how much lawn a desert needs when yet another suburbian paradise is being developed there. In a sense - even though lush lawns probably beat the looks of barren arid lands - the need for the use of water in an area where it is rare, for such luxuries is, while not exactly 'raping the natural world', certainly having a negative impact.

I always freak out when I see one of my company's janitors sprinkling the lawn ... at noon, when the sun is most intense ... needlessly ... what a waste.

Anyway, I'll make a search for that interview when I have time,

    cheers,
    Ragusa

It's true. California doesn't have nearly enough water to support it's population, not even close. In the event of a natural disaster that prevents water being imported to our fine state, you're going to see a lot of thirsty souls lining the roads. Or in other words, we'll be completely screwed (think RoadWarrior, except replace gas with water).

In many parts of CA you can actually be fined for watering your lawn at midday.

Urgh. The worst part of the week is done, the freaking double shift. Two days in a row. I hate those. I finished late (damned double shift!), had precious little time to chill out, and now time to sleep, then another day, rince and repeat. I'm going to fall asleep in a wave of fog, mark my words.

I have absolutely no problems typing when I'm drunk ... it's just reading it after I'm sober that's the issue.

I wouldn't know anything about things like that. I don't drink, swear, smoke or do anything else that takes away from my wholesome and clean-living image
