[IMG] Difference being you work for a wage, you volunteer for a cause even when payment is not guaranteed.

I get my travel and meals paid for and if I have to pay extra for my insurance then they pay that too but otherwise it's unpaid.

The thing is, raising deaf awareness is pretty important to me. I have a lot of deaf friends and family and I'm partially deaf. I find a lot of people are fine with me until they realise that I wear hearing aids, then they tend to start talking really loud and slowly. I'm deaf, I'm not stupid!

Then why do people say "deaf and dumb"? :p

Seriously, why *do* people say that? I've never understood that expression...

Dumb means you can't speak (verbally), I believe.

Associating speech with intellect? Misinterpreting the difficulty hearing a statement as difficulty in comprehending one? Failing decency as only humans can...

ION, My toxicology textbook is 48 years old... yet absolutely readable. Plain words! :D The author knew his poisons, alright.

We all know that your intellect is just fine, Sil!

This reminds me of one of my favorite scenes in film -- Shanghai Noon: Jackie Chan is trying to find Princess PeiPei in the Wild West, and he runs across some Indians (sorry, Native North Americans). They can't understand each other to save their lives, but they end up smoking the old peace pipe. Jackie says, LOUDLY and slowly, "which way to Carson City?" and the one Native turns to the other and says "he's saying it louder and slower, like that's gonna help!"

However, I didn't know you had a hearing impariment, Sil. In an effort to help you, I'll type slower. I hope that'll help ;):outta:

I'm not one for political correctness however, it really isn't right to use 'dumb' now. Mute, none-speaking those are fine. Lore is right. Not that long ago deaf people were thought to be either stupid or insane. A lot of them were put into asylums or homes. That's where the term 'dumb' came from (IIRC)

LKD, I thought you were American? You're all slow anyway aren't you?

Now *that* sounds cool. I love M*A*S*H*! I have all the seasons on DVD and the original theatrical movie.

Was there an actual Mt. Biking trail through the site?

I know this is very evil, but I had a buddy back in high school that was pretty deaf in both ears. When we would talk, I'd sometimes just stop talking but continue to mouth the words...or out of nowhere I'd say, "You know what I mean...right?" and then look at him and wait for a response. After awhile, he stopped falling for the gag, and would either sign or mouth some very creative insults. I don't know ASL, but at the time, I was dating my ex who did, so she'd translate. My favorite was when he'd just glare at me while flipping me off. Good times. :)

Not my work. Once they started paying for school, it became paid slavery. I *could* get out of it, but I'd have to pay more than $45,000.00. So, since I can't just pull that kind of money out of my a$$, I am a slave to the company for the next two years. :bad:

Kit - the trail runs to the site from either Las Virgenes or Kanan (I know you have some SoCal knowledge, but not sure how familiar you are with the SF Valley). So, yeah, I guess you could say the trail runs through the site. The trail was mostly easy -- one tough hill and a nice strech of gravel, rocks, narrow path, etc.

We had 3 12 year olds and a 9 year old with us, and they managed it with quite a few stops and some bike walking as well.

I am fairly familiar with the San Fernando Valley. I've been to Burbank, Northridge, Van Nuys, and Glendale many times.

The reason I asked about the trail is because, now that I have a sweet Mt. Bike, I'm looking for cool/unique trails to ride. Since I'm really out of shape and haven't ridden a bike in several years, I have to keep to the kiddie trails...for now. :p

I'm not going to be able to make it down to CA this year, but next year I'm planning on driving down to visit family and friends...and of course, go to Six Flags. I've been toying with the idea of bringing my bike with me.

CelticDream, over half of the people I talk to still use the term "Indian", despite it's inaccuracy and offensiveness. My students have picked up the term "Red Indians" and I try like heck to quash that one.

Woo. My twoish years old WD is showing bad sectors. Didn't screw around, and got a freaking 1TB spanking new one. I don't feel like reinstalling... but s*** happens, it seems.

I understood everything he said. Get with the times Silvery! :geezer:

DotW - What kind of WD drive was it? I'm not usually a WD fan, but I put a Caviar Blue in my dad's rig...the thing *better* last more than 2 years...

I personally can't wait for the Crucial SSD (6Gbps) to drop in price...or have any real competition from other brands. I'm holding off on any purchase until there are x68 based boards that have *native* support for SATA 6Gbps and USB 3.0.
