    Doop de doop de doop....

Oh, hey...so you know how I got promoted? Yeah....it's been 4 weeks since I signed the acceptance offer...and here I am, still a lousy operator. I know the POS machine in my bay *too* well, so my current boss is being a total b**ch, and she's not letting me go! She has the final say as to whether or not I get the job or not...but if something doesn't happen this week, I'm going to kill her. Simple as that.

Seriously though, I'm pissed that she's holding me back so long. :flaming:

Sunday's (no managers there) we always go out for "smoke breaks" and go behind a dumpster and pound a beer or take a shot, other days if its been long and stressful we go out once the managers leave for some relaxation.

Restaurants are hard work, you can be expected to go 9 hours without a break, but at the same time it can be a load of fun.

I never thought of it before but I think you're absolutely right. I just realised now that the closest group of colleagues I had was when we worked for the tyrannical micromanagement-obsessed boss. I made some great friends there, some of whom I'm still in touch with even though we're continents apart.

    Sharing tough times builds camaraderie.
Then again, there are always idiots at work that breaks everything down....

I once started studying for a university exam at 3 in the morning after surfing the net for like 5 hours... and the exam was at 8h30

What's even funnier is that my mark was 85% on it... good times... :D

Mandatory statistics exercises from April to June, on Fridays, 5 pm to 8 pm.
Either them or me have completely lost it...

    *longest sigh of his life*

Now I know why all the maintenance techs are in good shape....all the lifting of heavy objects in awkward positions uses muscles that I didn't even know about.

My whole body is sore from only 3 days of work. :(

Back to school today... ugh. I didn't get much work done over break, and these last fiveish weeks are going to be brutal.

There used to be an early exam term for Statistics in May, taking some heat of June exams block. Was looking forward to it.

Not this year, though. Some people are going to an optional excursion and the statistic exercises got kicked all the way to June, to suit them.
    I hate majority decisions.

I actually want to graduate this June, damn it. But no one asked me or any of the people that actually attend statistics lectures. Figures.

Working on of one of our decision collections, I was tasked with correcting 12 variations of a specific attribute within an XML element, which again appeared in 52 variations. Yuck. The original proposal was that students correct them manually, or that we task an Indian subcontractor with the tedious monkey work (they're even cheaper). Yuck again. I don't like outsourcing anyway.

So I wrote a regex that allowed me to cover the variations in one sweep, and a replacement string, and made the changes - all in a small fraction of the time it would have taken to make the corrections manually :D No errors :D Sadly, I don't get a bonus for the savings :nolike:

Not to mention that the Indians, far from employing an army of monkeys with typewriters, would probably have done just the same thing - to then bill 10 man days or some such.

Today is one of those days when, despite the looming RL of job etc. I really can't wait to graduate.

I hope postgraduate studies will be more fun. (Assuming of course, I graduate ok this June and not make an abysmal mess of things...)

    You'll do fine Lore!

For me, two more weeks of school then I'm finished for about a month til summer classes start up. Two classes, both online, one being economics and the other history. Cool thing is, since I switched to a Liberal Arts degree with a concentration in English/Communication, I'll be graduating earlier than originally expected (fall of 2011 instead of spring 2012). Then it's off to the local university to get my bachelor's in English with a Creative Writing concentration... still trying to figure out what to minor in lol.

Not looking forward to work - thanks to the oddballs who come in to use the non-student computers - well that and the fact that some of the people I work with use the job as time to study or goof off (socializing instead of working) so I end up doing the bulk of the work which isn't fun when my body is still recuperating from spending so much time off my thyroid meds. I'm still highly fatigued, etc., and am expected to pick up their slack. And then they wonder why I get cranky when I'm around them.

There I am...I'm lying on my back under a machine at work. I've got 6" of space on either side of me. On one side of me, there's a 480VAC supply line, and on the other is a 1400W RF generator. Everything above me is 300 degrees F (that's what the machine is set to run at). There is no airflow under the machine, so the air I'm working in is about 120 degrees F. Sweat is pouring into my eyes. The noise all around me is above 110dB. I've got a bad chlorine gas MFC (mass flow controller) directly above my face that I'm trying to remove. I'm seriously hoping that the gas line was properly purged with N2...because if it wasn't, I'm probably going to die as soon as I get the gas line disconnected.

It was in this moment, I had a thought.

'This F***ing sucks, but it sure as hell beats being an operator' :thumb:

I later learned that the front panel of the machine comes off, creating a wind tunnel of cool air that feels amazing. They told me that after I fixed it.

Sounds like a good idea. Now, where to find a distillery that needs an extra hand (and not least mouth)... :D

I got the phone call from my boss... my promotion is now official. The paperwork has been signed both by my manager's boss and the big boss, too. It's the dawn of a glorious new era... the day I had long been waiting for is now here, and DAMN, VICTORY tastes AWESOME.
