Today someone is mourning a loved one who has passed away. However, this person courageously put themselves on the organ donor list...this loved one is saving my aunt's life.

I have never registered as an organ donor. I will be doing so in March when my license needs renewing. For years I was always opposed to organ donation, but I have to come to realize that all of my reasons for believing so were stupid.

If all goes well, my aunt will be going into the operating room within the hour and twelve hours later will come out with a new liver.

I never understood why organ donorship is all kept very secret, but now I know. There is such an overwhelming relief and sense of responsiblilty to the donor that if we could find out the family of the donor, I don't know if we could ever do enough to thank them, even though they must be going through hell right now.

Apologies if I posted this in the wrong forum, I can never figure things like that out.

That is indeed one of the most generous gesture that can be done, saving a life in the most selfless manner.

I'm an organ donor because I'd love the idea of savings somebody's life; if mine gave out on me I'd hope my body could could contribute. If it were an untimely death for me my parents grief would be easier on them if they knew somebody else were to benefit from it.

I have been a listed organ donor since I first got my driver's license at 20. My father was listed as a donor too, but the cancer invaded too many organs. The only thing than was transplanted was his corneas, although a lot of tissue was used for research.

Funny - I thought this thread was about people who ride motorcycles, I call them organ donors. Anyway, I think it's a great idea and really can't understand why anyone wouldn't do it. When you're dead, you've got no use for your spare parts, but they could save someone else's life.

One of my friends died in a motorcycle crash and they saved someone with his organs. True organ donor in dmc's book.

I'm a donor. They've got full privlages to pretty much everything except my skin and my eyes...because if I ever have kids, I want to be stuffed with an articulating arm so I can do this:

That way, I can give my future kids the "You're going out looking like that?!?!?!" look from beyond the grave.

Sad news, the liver was too fatty and they couldn't transplant it. Back to the waiting list. A long day of waiting for nothing.

I've been a doner since I was old enough (18) to register.

I hope another doner comes up soon for your aunt (not that I want anyone to die!)

[IMG] Same, good luck in finding a donor.

I've recently had the disappoinemtne of a family member being prepped for donation then being told he cannot have it. Pretty much broke my heart because I know how much it meant and what it now means.

I don't think I'm elligable to organ donation. It was brought up a while back when I was in hospital when a doctor was filling in a little questionnaire each new each new patient arrived, he simply checked 'No - medical' without even querying it.

Kev wants to be an organ donor, but only for internal, abdominal organs. He wants his eyes and face left intact and I don't blame him.

My stuff is my own. I know it is selfish and whatnot and it probably is my last gesture of spite towards the world in general but my body is *mine* and if I cant have it no one else can either. In many ways I am a petty petty person.

I've been on the register since I was old enough, same with donating blood and I'm currently waiting to see if I'm a suitable match to a patient prior to donating bone marrow (Ouch! - Massive needle!!:wail:)

Personal view is why not. I would expect that if I needed a transplant, I should be able to have one. How, therefore can I not be on the register and look myself in the mirror?

strangely, while I am always so pro-science I am very opposed to organ donation. I wont comment any deeper here as my views have upset people in the past who have asked for my opinion on the subject.

I'm a donor, but I know people who are opposed to it for religious reasons (believing that you won't rest well unless all of your body is buried). Fair enough, I guess, but I'm an Atheist and bugger resting well if I can save a few people even when dead. Besides, they're bound to pass away sooner or later and then I can rest in peace.

Good luck finding a donor, Snook.

I intend to be cremated and buried at sea. They can harvest my body to extreme proportions when I die.

I am extremely paranoid. I'll reiterate what I have said in the past. I imagine a scenario like this:

LKD has been in a serious accident. He has critical injuries that are not yet fatal. A dedicated team of doctors could save his life.

In the next room, a filthy criminal who has been convicted of 12 rapes and is accused of 14 more is suffering kidney failure. Taxpayers are on the hook for the full cost of this bastard's transplant cost. The doctors are raging liberal loony toons who feel sorry for this guy because his mother didn't give him ice cream when he was a kid. According to these doctors' world view, the criminal never had the chances that old LKD had -- if he had, he would have been a fine upstanding citizen*!! So the lead doctor takes a peek at LKD's donation card. Sweet!! It's filled out! All they doctors have to do is just claim that the injuries are more serious than they are and that no treatment is viable. They just have to wait for LKD to die his slow miserable death so they can perform the transplant, and the criminal is up and running again, off to rape LKD's kids now, with the doctors wringing their hands and saying "well, it's a pity about those rapes, but letting LKD die was the best choice. There's no way we could have known that the crimnal was going to commit more crimes, because it's a legal principle that past bad behaviour is NO indicator of future bad behaviour, right? Let's go burn a few flags now and smoke some weed!!"

Seriously, I do not trust the medical establishment to act in my best interests. I think it's much more likely that they'll judge me because I am from a non-persecuted group, and they might think that I deserve some karma back.

If my body is already dead, then whatever -- I trust my wife to release my organs. But I want that decision in her hands, not in the hands of people who might believe my life has less value or potential than that of the other person*.

Most of my friends think I'm paranoid. Maybe they're right.

I donate blood all the time, though. No skin off my nose there.

*please note that I don't think that my life is MORE valuable than that of the average organ recipient. But I don't think that it is of any LESS value either.

    No...F***ing...WAY!!!

You come near me with a gigantic needle with the intention of piercing it through my bone, you'd better pray to your god that I'm either dead, or really, really, reeeeeeeeeeally drunk *and* loaded with pain-killers. :toofar:

If not, then you can bet your ass that I'm going to :outta:

I think they're making everyone organ donors here by default, so only those who want to opt out will need to register. I think that that makes sense as the majority would probably support it. I never bothered to register (looks like I won't have to now anyway), but I've always said that if they can get some good use out of my dead body, go for it. Of course, I'd prefer if I could mix some of LKD's paranoia precautions in and only allow my organs to be used for people without a criminal record... but then again, I know enough human lowlifes to know that so many successfully fly below the radar that that probably wouldn't lessen the chances of someone undeserving potentially getting them anyway. But I guess that's the risk that we must take.

They contemplated that in the UK too, however it violates the human rights act and was illegal
