There is a certain benefit in helping Kolgrim.
If you do as he wishes and defile the urn, you'll earn the 'blasphemous' achievement, which is awesome for those players who want to be really, really evil. More substantial is ...
... that Kolgrim will grant you access to the Reaver specialisation, which is even more awesome for those players who want to be really, really evil fighters.
Oh, and when you choose to defile the urn with Leliana and Wynne in your party ...
... they will be very angry at you and attack you and you'll have to kill them (which is easy) and you'll probably lose the following fight because the two enemies accompanying the warden of the urn are really tough and IMO can't be dealt with by two tanks in what is a very melee heavy fight. I'm speaking from experience. If you take Morrigan, Shale or Sten with you on the other hand, that's a different story and a far easier fight.

Kolgrim doesn't have that sword. ;) You can side with Kolgrim and still pick up Spellweaver from those caves.

Huh? I could have sworn I picked it off his corpse...but then again, I may have been very sleep deprived when I was playing during that part. :hmm:

No, you picked it off a corpse a couple fights earlier (
from a mage guarding dragon eggs
    ).
Kolgrim has a relatively nice greataxe.

Man I feel like an idoit. He wasn't hard on my casual or normal play through in either location.

It's easy to overlook some foes in the game. There are so many of them!

Besides depending on your party and on your tactics some fights can be over before you even get started. ;)

Quite, quite true. Arrow of Slaying.

Killed him outright on my first play too.

Felt a bit bad about the horn-induced fight, though. I probably won't do that one on this playthrough.

Also depending on the game difficulty too...Since I play the game in real time I tend to play on casual. My last play through was on normal and it was very hard trying to play in real time. I ended up pausing on the more difficult bosses.

I pause much of the time, especially when casting spells.

I especially like to tag-team Cone of Cold alternately when fighting a Revenant. When two casters alternate the spell, it wears off just about at the same time one can recast it. The Revenant seems pretty susceptible to Cone of Cold too because it's almost always effective while Petrify is often resisted. I need to pause to make sure I'm not catching my meleers in the cone.
