I concur with you DR as I may have put to much emphasis on just one song when dmc makes some very good points about the entire album being tailored for the radio. To be honest there is one track that I liked on the Black Album and it's Of Wolf and Man. I never heard it on the radio though.

When I think about what Joe Satriani had to say about Kirk Hammett I can't help reaching the conclusion that Hammett did squander his talent.

    Nothing could be more true.

Dave Mustaine may have an attitude problem linked to drugs and alcohol abuse but he was nevertheless a major influence on earlier Metallica albums. One may wonder how Metallica would have fared without Mustaine's early contribution. Although some may not agree with me I'm convinced he was by far the most talented member of the original formation.

They still recorded it though, which is fully the point.

I don't think you can ever really criticize a musician for selling out, I mean, if I were in a position to do so, you bet I would. If you have the opportunity to apply your talents to making money, by all means go for it.

As for the two bands, I'd have to say I like Metallica more. Not really a fan of metal (which throws out my opinion's relevance :p), I just prefer Hetfields vocals to anything that Mustaine did. Add in the fact that their "sell-out" took them further away from Metal (again genre I'm not huge on) well that's more reason. However, I would also like to note that overall I do not like either of these bands. Metallica's stuff past the Black album is mostly drivel, and Megadeth is what they are, take it or leave it.

For notation purposes the only metal bands I ever really listen to are Iron Maiden, Pantera, and Slayer. Mostly due to the influence of my peers and what music is on at social gatherings

Why can't you like both? Not that I do, never really listened to Megadeth, always thought the name was incredibly silly and thought that Metallica are quite ok, especially their radio tailored Black Album.

Aside: I remember seeing a news report years ago where they were covering a troubled youth and some marginally bad thing he had done. Apparently their crack investigation revealed that he was a fan of Megadeth. Unfortunately that got mixed up in translation to the 'on-the-scene' reporter (who probably only got briefed on the matter seconds before going live). She stated in her live report that the youth was known to be a fan of "Maggot Death." The in-studio talking heads all nodded knowingly.

Can't say I'm much of a fan of either band. Even when I first got into metal, I already thought they both made pretty soft stuff. If I'd give a preference for one band over the other, though, I'd say I prefer Metallica. I can never listen to Megadeth for long before the vocals start to get on my nerves. Master of Puppets on the other hand is an album I occasionally put up on my playlist to listen to for a while. And despite the flack it seems to getting here, I like the Black album as well. Sad but True is one of my favorite Metallica songs still. They may have changed their sound significantly for that album, but I don't dislike it. Most of it still isn't much radio broadcasting material in my opinion. And why is everyone tripping over the Black album for Nothing Else Matters when And Justice for All had One, which was practically equally slow?

I've never listened to Megadeth much. The songs I heard reminded me of the early metal/hardrock and I can't say I ever really liked that kind of stuff so I never bothered to look up more of their music. If I'm going to have to listen to this genre of music, give me Iced Earth.

Best song, though? Carved Up by Hypocrisy. Pure gold all the way through.

I agree, though I'd argue that it can make an album as a whole better. Not always - the tribal songs on Sepultura's Roots album just made me skip those songs - but for instance Harmony Corruption on Napalm Death's Death by Manipulation really provided a break between the unrelenting assault that is their normal repertoire.

I'm not much of a metal fan, but I'd pick Metallica. It's not really a matter of vocals (I find both Hetfield and Mustaine's voices to be very grating) but Metallica have a number of surprisingly beautiful melodies hidden throughout their songs on Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets, and in just about every song on And Justice For All. Off the top of my head I can think of Call of Ktulu, the middle instrumental bit in Master of Puppets, the very beginning of Blackened, Eye of the Beholder, and most of Justice For All and To Live Is To Die. I even find it disappointing that in many songs they last for such a short time before they go "full metal" again. Black sadly had much less of this, and by Load they were gone. I stopped buying their stuff after this.

You can. I did, and technically, still do. But because of the links between Metallica and Megadeth (i.e. Mustaine getting kicked out of Metallica to start Megadeth, and the members' ongoing rivalries as a result), and because at least at one time, these bands were both leaders in their particular style of heavy metal (thrash metal, is what I believe we used to call it), people just can't help but ask the question. I think that most people who enter this debate actually do like both bands at least to some extent, but tend to be pretty vocal about which is the better of the two. This debate is almost a national pasttime at this point....

Those who prefer Megadeth seem to share some of Mustaine's angst toward being booted out of Metallica. In truth, booting Mustaine, who really didn't fit in with Metallica attitude-wise, resulted in two great bands that both made lasting marks on heavy metal music. I know my boyhood room had 2 times the awesome posters covering the walls because both of these bands existed.

If this is a contest, I'll say Machine Head. They are still relevant, and are musically way better than Megadeth or Metallica. Heck, even the original Sepultura and Pantera are better than both. Not to speak of Slayer.

If I'd have to choose between the two: Metallica. Most of Megadeth's songs sound the same, and they could never beat Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets and ...and Justice for All. I don't care if they are a bunch of pricks (though I think only Ulrich has earned that moniker). What counts it the music.

    Yay...now I get to give my :2c:
    Two things one this one...
    1. I've heard plenty of Metallica and Megadeth at our local strip clubs. :heh:

    2. Megadeth is considered one of the 4 pillars (I've also heard "Fathers") of heavy metal. I think Megadeth's lack of "popularity" is due in part to the sound of Dave's voice. I like it, but all my friends don't like Megadeth. They all say the music is awesome, but that they don't like Dave's voice. One of my friends says Dave sounds like he's pushing out a massive s*** as he sings... :bad:

So how about Megadeth - Promises? :hmm:

I love the music of ToS, but that is one song that I can't stand the vocals....

I also think that Megadeth didn't become as popular is due to the fact that Megadeth *started* as Dave's revenge to spite Metallica. It's like Dave said, "Kick me out will you?!?! Well, I'll show you!"

    Anyhoo...
I love them both equally. I would like nothing more than to see Metallica and Megadeth on stage together in one massive concert...but that'll never happen because Dave is a drunken pr*ck who can't keep his mouth shut. Metallica started to suck once James got sober...which resulted in St. Anger. :bang: However, Death Magnetic is a great step in the right direction.

    My favories:
Megadeth - She-Wolf, Angry Again, 99 Ways to Die, Diadems, and of course...Hangar 18.

Metallica - ...And Justice for All, Eye of the Beholder, Seek and Destroy, All Nightmare Long, and Orion.

......besides Amon Amarth pwns them both anyway.... :p
    /me runs off

I would agree that numbers don't tell everything. But they do tell something. Selling millions more than the other guy does make a statement of some sort.

However, in terms of musical or entertainment talent, there's also judgements to be made. I'm not a fan of metal, so in terms of these two bands I don't know poop, so the questions I would are as follows:

1: Whose music is more complex, involving harmonies, rhythms, chord progressions, etc?

2: Whose voice is more auditorially appealing? Which band has better sounding backup vocals?

3: Who puts on a better show?

4: Whose lyrics have more poetic value to them?

All of these have a HUGE element of subjectivity to them. A computer could tell you who is on key more often -- that's about as objective as it can get.

So staying power, sales, and other numbers do have a place, because those things are objective. But they'll never convince someone who's totally convinced on one of the subjective questions.

And Snook, I want to know how Mrs. Snook feels about your expertise in the field of strip club playlists!

According to whom, Kit? Unless you mean "thrash metal," since metal has been around since the 1970s, they could not be considered a "founding" band. True they may be a "pillar" of metal, for those who consider them essential in some way, but they are fairly late to the metal scene. It may seem I'm nit-picking a bit, and I apologize if I seem that way, but I don't even consider them essential, like say Iron Maiden or Metallica. However, I'm not really a metal fan, at least of modern metal. I still listen to Uriah Heep and Deep Purple, which suits my urges towards the metal genre just fine. :)

How do you think I met her?

Only kidding, there are some things that the Mrs. is very openminded about. The army has a "don't ask, don't tell" policy, she has a "don't touch, don't tell" policy :)

Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer are Thrash Metal's Big 4, which isn't to say they are the only influential bands, but they are considered to be the biggest four.

Heavy metal is a very large genre, with dozens of major bands, since it has been around for some 40 years. Thrash has been around since the mid-80s and is a smaller, and more narrowly defined subgenre, with roots much less in the blues, jazz or classical, and owes more of its influence to the punk movement of the late 70s and early 80s. That's just my humble opinion and not meant as a definitive explaination, except to say that one can be a heavy metal fan and still not like Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer, or even Metallica. But Metallica is such a huge, commercial institution of metal that they are hard to ignore.
