Ah, true. For me, Mind Flayers/Illithid are either weak prey and easy experience... or an absolute nightmare. One single Cleric spell, Chaotic Commands, can render their psionic onslaught useless, and it's then a simple matter of sending in your buffed tank with a really low AC and hoping the dice are in your favour. If I'm playing a Sorcerer I don't tend to go there until I can Dragon's Breath the bastards! Otherwise it's really difficult indeed.

I actually had a strong dislike for Drow Elves the first time I was playing, since they're basically immune to magic, and I was a Sorcerer without ToB installed. All I could do was fling hasted skeletal minions and Mordy swords at them and hope for the best. Dragon's Breath and Planetars make it too easy.

Let's not forget Beholders. Without the Shield of Balduran, the Cloak of Cheese, or Spell Immunity: Abjuration + a ****ton of buffs, they're difficult enough. Throw in Anti-Magic Ray, which I cannot remember whether it bypasses Spell Immunity, but is bloody annoying anyway, and Elder Orbs' tendency to cast Imprisonment, which you definitely need either the spell or a class ability for...

    Anyway, sorry about off topic.

Regarding the Cloakwood, on my first go... well, I got slaughtered. Took me quite a while to learn the ins and outs of these games. Having said that, sometimes I STILL get owned. Web traps are just the most ridiculously annoying idea I've seen... especially as you can't rest them off, and you can't even save, I don't think. Meanwhile you're probably getting poisoned to **** by all manner of beasties. And oh yes WYVERNS! Who could have forgotten the wyverns? A waylay full of them is just asking for trouble.

There are so many dangerous monsters in these games if you don't know what you're doing. But that's great, because I love a challenge.

That ambush of wyverns between the second and third areas (I think) of Cloakwood is something special. Formidable to say the least.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but I remember dying to Tarnesh (one of the bounty hunters) at the Friendly Arm Inn countless times. He always seemed to get a mirror image off, then just focus ME with magic missiles :(

After the second or third runthrough, I made sure that NEVER happened again :p

That's right, he usually would get me with a fear spell like horror, then finish me off at liesure.

Ijust started a new character, and I forgot how lame I am at level 1. I was on my way to FA Inn, taking a shortcut when I walked into a pair of wolves. Imoen and I were doing ok, then I noticed her arrows had stopped coming. I turned around to look and saw she was getting bushwhacked by a bunch of xvarts. Trying to reposition, I moved Imoen north to get her away from the xvarts and ran her right into pack of diseased gibberlings. It turned out to be quite a Party. I barely made it through, but I beat 'em all. Toughest fight I've been through in a while.

Actually, that point about Tarnesh is a good one. I remember my first game, with an elven F/M: the monitor on my computer was too dark to see anything in the game's night time, and when I arrived at the FAI i just wandered around randomly until the conversation window appeared and then I got spelled to death. :shake: One of those really frustrating "WTF?!" deaths. Seeing how weak you are at the beginning of the game, a run of bad rolls can still make him a right PITA from time to time. At least he teaches you an important lesson: a casting of "Remove Fear" per day is worth its weight in gold!

    Oh hai mags!

Can only agree with you on this one. I was (and some times still am) pulling my hair out when I first stumbled upon that mofo. I can't recall which class I was the first time, but it was probably something like a fighter or some such (I was like 12 or 13 or something and knew absolutely nothing about D&D. I had borrowed the game from my geekish older brother :p). I think I finally beat him with a streak of lucky shots from Imoen, interrupting his mirror image and some subsequent spells .

Ghasts for me. They are horrible, if someone gets paralyzed I never am be able to kill the couple of them before they kill him. (going on level 2 ^^)

    I HATE THEM

Arrows. Never let the undead get close, except for skeletons were you want to run up to them to make them stop shooting arrows.

Well, I'm doing a bit better against them now. But how to kill Mustard Jellies? They seem to be immune to everything!

EDIT: ok, I got them killed by summoning ogres to help me. Massive blunt trauma always works. ;P Nasty creatures, still.

    I couldn't agree more. :D

It took me forever to figure out what to do with golems, and then suddenly I was beating them with sticks - literary. Before that I had the crazy habit of using the retaliation feature of Keldorn's armour and plenty of healing. :shake:

(I had no idea what D&D was when I first played... and made most useful monster weakness discoveries in moments of sheer despair. :p)

I used to have Korgan bash the clay golems to death with the extra 1d4 (or whatever it was) damage from Stonefire and Frostreaver - and he actually did so quite easily...

Mustard Jellies, Vampire Wolves, and the Flesh Golems require +1 weapons to hit. There is one strong undead that needs +1 weapons to hit too. He has the +2 dagger as a drop and is in a cave (tomb) in the south. Can't think of his name (Revenant?) And one of the stronger Spiders (Wraith Spider?) needs +1 weapons to hit too.

I think those are the only beings in the outside world of BG 1 you need +1 weapons for. This doesn't count the Werewolf Island, or Durlag's Tower, or the BG city area, or the underneath Candlekeep area (chapter 6).

    Mustard Jellies hate fire too.

    edit:

I think maybe the stronger basilisk (Greater Basilisk?) might too but I 've always upgraded eveyone in my party by the time I meet these guys so I've never tested a normal weapon against them.

The Helmet of Charm Protection costs around 600 with bad ass store discount at Feldepost`s. Equip your tank with it, keep the rest of the party on ranged weapons and every Sirene goes down like a 5 dollar hoe.

The whole area in the desert, wich is full of basiliks took me like 1 protection from petrification cast to clear, so having one memorized is usually sufficient to own them from the distance with your tank positioned on close proximity.

What drives me crazy are enemy spellcasters in groups. Impossible to kill them quickly when running into them without a reload. Something always goes wrong. Best examples are those 4 red wizards or the first group in the ice cave. I hate them and never seem to beat them without cheesing them to death.

Sirines and Kobold Commandos are pretty annoying. I used to really hate sword spiders but they don't seem so bad these days. I think though wolfweres and werewolves are ridiculously tough. I never managed to get past the werewolf island quest because I was so useless against them.

I actually think one of the hardest fights in the game is the guy who waits outside the inn in Nashkel for you after you clear the mines. A nasty place to put that fight as you're probably near dead and need a rest. Another tough one is that weird girl who talks about entropy and has the gauntlets of ogre power.

My first time through the game, I got so paranoid that if I saw ANY robed figure facing my party, I'd back track towards the guards. Guards helped me with Tarnesh and Nimbul. I even backed away from Elminster once, thinking "Arrgh! Red Wizard!"

    I seriously hate vampiric wolves.

They appear fairly early in the game, when my party is fairly weak and don't have +n weapons yet. When I do have a +1 weapon, they're regenerating faster than I can hot them. Bastards!

Ghasts and Kobold Commando's are serious contenders to that nr 1 spot though!
