Having no money, I can't get it. Having a crappy laptop that I bought the day after Vista came out (I had intended to get it earlier and avoid Vista altogether, but fate intervened :shakes fist: ), I won't be getting it until I have some serious cash (probably around 1K+ for a new gaming rig to run DA:O). For once, though, this all almost seems like an up. Since it'll probably be a while, I should know what I'm getting into with 7 before I get it.

That said, I'd upgrade just to get away from Vista, which has been a nightmare for me. Dang, I need a job! :coffee2:

Actually, the only reason I got it so early was because I had a chance to get it for about a third of that it would cost later. I would have liked to spend my money another way actually, but in March 2010 the RC would have expired and I'd have to buy Windows 7 anyway.

:shake: Besides, I got a full version, with both 32bit and 64bit install DVDs, not just an upgrade. Anyone who wants to buy my old Vista Home Premium (64bit only)? :shake:

I think the upgrade comes with both versions as well, if it's Win Pro or Ultimate....

Considering this is what I keep shaking my fist at whenever I use my laptop, the answer is NO! I wouldn't even take it off you for free!

Well, first off, that author is an idiot. Who tries to run a modern OS is only 1GB of RAM?!?! :bang:
Also, he forgot a ton of PROs. Configurable UAC, fully multi-thread compatible, and enhanced Windows Explorer for example. I've found dozens of other awesome/useful new or improved features.

Don't take one idiot writer's opinion, the fact that he admits to only have ran Win7 for about 2 weeks is evidence that he should not have written the article. I've been running the Beta -> RC since each version was available to the public, and I love Win7!

What I mean is, when I installed BG and BG2, the game installed fine, but would crash as soon as you created a character. Installing the expansion, and then patching the expansion fixed the problem. I got to the Cloakwood Forest in BG, and to Spellhold in BG2 without a single bug/hiccup/oddity. :D I did all of this outside of the XP Mode to see how the games fared in the new OS.

The 32/64 bit thing is weird... here they're selling the versions separately, for example. But in the US, both versions are in the same box.

I bought mine from Amazon.co.uk - it might just be the Anglo-American version.

Win7 has DirectX 11. ATI's HD 5870 supports DX11. There are several games under development which are believed to be coded for DX11. The HD 5870 b**ch-slaps Nvidia's fastest card for under $300*.

Due to these 4 facts, I now know what I'm getting myself for Xmas - a copy of Win7 Pro, a shiny new HD 5870, and a preorder for Crysis 2 and D&D Online! It's going to cost over $600...but one must splurge on one's self on occasion!

(* I just threw that one in there to make the Nvidia fanboys green with envy; what with ATI's fastest flagship card to date being released for under $300 and all... Up till the HD 5870 was released, you needed a refinance on your mortgage just to buy Nvidia's current flagship card... :p )

Games coded for DX11? I'll believe it when I see it. I'm still waiting to see games coded for DX10... and no, inactivating DX9 features through an INI file does not count as a DX10 feature.

ATI's HD 5870 rocks. It'd be nice to have. That said, I have two 19" LCD screens, and I play on one of them, meaning that I yet, and probably for a while, have to tax my ATI 4870 to the fullest. I don't expect that to happen before end of next year or so.

I sure am tech happy, but I also need to watch my budget and requirements. I have decided for myself that an SSD serves me far better, even more so as Windows 7 natively supoorts TRIM. It promises an all out improvement in performance.

As I already said: I'll believe it when I see it :p

Crysis was advertised as a DX10 game and made it onto that list. It didn't take long for people to figure out how to enable the supposedly DX10-only features on XP... Seeing Crysis 2 on the DX11 list gets me immediately suspicious.

My advice would be to pass on Win 7, at least for now. I haven't been in computer sales for a long time, but generally, speaking as a sales person, if a customer feels that uncomfortable before he even tries a product, I recommended he waits until he has more of an opportunity to become familiar with it. Otherwise, he will find a reason to not like it and ruin any chance he/she may have with it. But personally, I think it's a pretty good OS.

Vista also supports DirectX 11. It is available via WU now that 7 is officially out. In fact I just downloaded it. Partly because of this I see no reason whatsoever to upgrade to 7 myself as I use Windows only for gaming. 7 and Vista should be about equal in that (except that 7 has a better compatibility mode, but I do not play ancient Windows games). Just another POV.

Been running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit for three days now.

Thus far, only major bugs are Explorer not liking reformatting 1tb drives (works fine through computer management though) and MSN refusing to close to tray without compatibility mode.

And 8gb of memory, three SATA2 500gb drives. One for OS, one for program files, one for swap and temp. <3

I mean, Windows 7 uses 1.5gb idle on my system, but I've still got six gigs free.

    I take it you're running 64 right?

You know it is said that it's better to splurge on others than on one's self as it makes you feel good about yourself. Better to give than to receive after all.

He said he has 8GB RAM. He'd be an idiot if he used 32bit - probably he didn't buy all that RAM at some expense to only use ~3,4GB of it :)

Oh, and I do have 8GB RAM as well now
