That's right boys and girls, Win7 has hit the shelves in all of its wondrous glory!

While I'm still using the RC of Win7, I can't wait till I have some spare cash so I can finally migrate permanently to Win7. I'll probably keep WinXP on my spare HDD...just in case I need XP for any older games that I know won't work in Win7...

Now that its out, I'm sure PC Mag and PC World will have plenty of tips, tricks, and other cool stuff about Win7. I'll try to keep up to date on as much as I can and post the good stuff here.

Hmmm...this could be the motivation I need to re-do my website...maybe use it as a repository for articles and general Win7 knowledge. :D

You can score your copy of Win7 *and* help SP at the same time by buying it through on the links here on the BoM:

    Good stuff! :thumb:

Using the RC as well, and am happy so far. I only bought the official version already because I got it at a substantial discount. I expect it in my mail tomorrow or on Saturday :)

I'll stick with the XP for the foreseeable future, thank you very much. Saving up as much money as possible for next year's move, and I have made it this far without Windows 7. Come to think of it, I don't believe I've bought ANYTHING for the computer in this calendar year...

What with all the excitement? Don't get me wrong it's always nice to see the banana dance but what is so hot about Windows 7?

Looking at this banana, one would think it's the next best thing to a supermodel giving away free bagels at a wet T shirt contest.

    Caradhras,
some arguments in favour of Windows 7: It is the first mainstream Windows world 64bit OS that actually works, and works well. It allows me to use 4GB RAM and more. It is not anywhere near as lean as Windows XP, but about as fast. It is reliable. It fully supports multi threading, and it fully supports SSD (i.e. TRIM). It's a joy to install.

It's just a darn pity I bought Vista 64, which except for looks was just crap. That's why I didn't hesitate to ditch it. I am using Windows 7 beta and then RC for about half a year now. I like it.

Caradhras, look at it this way. XP is the beautiful girlfriend of your high school days. They are now over and she is getting older and wrinklier. Then Vista comes along and "Hey, something new!", but then you find out vista has a bunch of spoiled, fatherless brats and 3 divorces on her belt. Then, Windows 7 comes along and whamo! You just met that girl who reminds you of your high school sweetie, but much more refined and still has her beauty....:)

I was at a shop before opening time and got the 64 bit edition. While I was there I also got a ssd to put it on, and 4 gig extra ram to make it comfy.

    A whole day of Bliss.

Win 7 is probably full of bugs. Been seriously considering switching to mac, or linux lately.

Vista was the bug. Windows 7 is the bugfix. As I said, it's ok so far.

I ran Win 7 RC1 for months with almost no trouble. While I liked Vista just fine, once they fixed the driver issues, it seemed slower by comparsion. I still like Movie Maker in Vista. The download, Movie Maker Live for Win 7, is absolute junk. I wouldn't bother with any of the Win Live stuff.

Apple stuff is OK, and I've always liked their operating systems, but the hardware is very propiertary, overpriced and just a pain to mess with.

I've posted 26 pictures on my SP album. Win7 isn't just "hot", she's a sexy beast!

I am green with envy....seriously! :kneel:

I've been running Win7 since the Beta was first released, and then formatted the drive and installed RC1 once it was released. I tested many old and new games and programs...I found a few problems with older games, but the game's patch fixed them.

Other than that, I've not encountered a single bug during everyday computing, hardcore gamming sessions, intensive photoshop work, huge quantities of large and small file transfers (I transferred all 30 of my game disk images (anywhere from 700MB - 8.5GB each) all at once, then my entire 1200 song Mp3 collection all at once), and not a single bug, hicup, or oddity while doing so! :D

Oh yeah...I forgot to add the shameless SP support plug... :p

    -fixed! :)

Did you try out the compatibility mode? How does compare to the (practically useless) ones in XP and Vista?

New Zealand was the first country in the world to launch Windows 7! Woohoo!

I might get around to getting it in a couple of years, once it becomes free. I can't imagine actually paying money for an operating system just because it's new.

Just read this and... well I'm not sure what to think.

The entire list of "pros" sounds like a complete joke. Some "features" are completely useless, some aren't even new features in Win7 and some are things I would not want. Worst of all, the major con is that his system freezes more than once an hour (he doesn't specify how long the freeze lasts) and his idea of being a "power user" is having multiple tabs and a video; my idea of power user is when I have multiple tabs and a video while the molecular modeler renders in the background.

The funny thing is that, at the end, he even says that it's not worth upgrading from Vista for the new features. Considering how much Vista pisses me off, and that none of the features he mentions would encourage me to bother with a new installation (never mind buying the damn thing)... how accurate is the article? Because if it is accurate then I'm not touching 7 with a 10-foot pole.

My Windows 7 Home Premium was in my mail today. Sweet. It will remain unopened until I get my SSD.

    ---------- Added 0 hours, 1 minutes and 48 seconds later... ----------

What exactly do you mean by that? That there is a Windows 7 patch for older games?
