I can't speak for Germany but they aren't mandatory in Denmark. The authorities do invest in campaigns to get people to use helmets, and most do.

They sure are not mandatory here. A lot of people use the bike in Holland, but I rarely see someone wear a helmet. Most elementary schools do give bike classes, so that children are at least taught how to behave and avoid accidents.

    Tal,
bike helmets aren't mandatory in Germany. For most of the time that will be ok anyway, but in the city with dense traffic ... on my way back from work I have passed by a couple bicycle accidents with cars lately (needless to say, the bicycle riders appear to have lost in every instance), and every time it left me with a bad feeling. For the next thirty minutes that is.

I don't think a helment is going to do much good against being hit/ran over by a car...

Helmets are proven to significantly reduce risk of traumatic brain injury in serious bicycle accidents i.e. yes, your leg or arm may indeed be broken, but you have much lower risk of, say, falling into a vegetative state afterwards because of a heavy head or brain injury.

True....but being hit by a speeding car usually = death

Your lifeless body will be mangled and broken...but hey, at least your brain will be safe. Perhaps they can put your head in a jar like they do in Futurama! :p

Certainly. But the helmet may save your life in less severe accidents.

My father hit a car while driving on his moped back in the early 1980's. He was flung over the car's hood and into the asphalt, and was taken to hospital with a broken leg and a severe concussion. Without a helmet he would have been dead.

That really depends. I saw part of this reality TV show the other day where this guy was walking across a street when a drunk driver plowed through him. The guy rolled over the hood and basically did a flip over the top so hard both his shoes went flying off into the air. According to the show he suffered a broken leg. The cop (whose dash camera caught the footage) caught the hit and run driver and the guy didn't even seem to know what had happened. Crazy.

Haha, Dane Cook has a joke about that. Not sure if he saw the same program (although it is an older joke, circa 2004).

Bike helmets are only mandatory for children in Florida. UF holds a lot of bike safety classes that stress the benefits of helmet use, and the fact that "the car has a much longer stopping distance than you do."
Gainesville has managed to way reduce the number and severity of bike accidents over the years. They still happen, but considering how many bikes and cars are on the same roads, the percentage is small.

ION, this Saturday was misadventures in home improvement.
Backstory: My house has the original plumbing & bathroom fixtures from when it was built in 1968. The toilet in my bathroom had quit functioning, so we replaced the innards, only for the tank to crack, and send me back to bucket flushing. I'm abbreviating this timeline, the toilet has been bucket flush only for the better parts of two years now.
My grandmother had a spare since her had been replaced with one more friendly to mobility limited people.
My friend and I went to install this on Saturday. Should be easy, right? Right.
So, we had to go shopping for supplies, so my friend suggested pulling out the old one first to make sure the wax ring I had would work. That was fine. What was not fine was the fact that several tiles come up with the toilet. So, this is now a reflooring + toilet installation project. Joy.
Due to the timing (it was early afternoon at this point) I decided that new vinyl tiles would have to do. so, off shopping we went, for the toilet supplies, new tiles, and latex primer, since I wanted to do this properly.
We got back to the house, and pulled up the THREE sets of old tiles that were on the floor, then cleaned out the outgoing drain, which had old wax ring remnants, and oakum packing, from the looks of it. Then primed the floor. Luckily it only took and hour for it to dry. Then laid down enough tiles to cover up to the toilet area. There were a few that did not lay down perfectly, but those were sealed with caulk.
Th toilet was installed without issue we thought, but when it was tested, it rocks. This is a bad thing. By this time is was 9pm and we had not eaten dinner, so I called it quits for the night, before we started making mistakes that would cause bigger problems.
So, tonight is the removal and re-install of the toilet. Later this week will be finishing the tiles. They are not as urgent, the concrete is painted with the primer, so it'll be easy to keep clean for another day or so. Luckily, I am the only one that uses that bathroom.

A year or so ago, a co-worker of mine was walking to work. While she was crossing the street (she had her crossing signal), a car turned left and plowed right through her. And the driver, with the "good" presence of mind, had the reflex to accelerate and drag my coworker a few feet further.

Witnesses on the scene said the driver just seemed neutral. She didn't seem concerned, wasn't panicking.. But what most disgusting, is that the driver was charged with "Failed to stop for a pedestrian"... WTF?? Another co-worker was on the scene when the accident happened, and the police didn't even want to talk to her. In fact, they never asked the victim anything... makes me mad... grrr...
