Here in Houston, DR (that's just how I prefaced the rest of my remarks). Also, I'm sure you know that part of it is directed towards Hispanics as well. I think that's part of the Wilson deal. It's clearly not "German immigrants" that Wilson was ranting about. While I think people should be here legally, not every Hispanic is here illegally, and Wilson knows it. That's why how we approach the "verification" deal is important.

DR and Blades: Often jokes are used to perpetuate racism and are in fact ways to humiliate someone.

There was a deeply ironic--and telling--exchange on CNN a few days ago. One of the teabaggers (I gather a prominent leader sort) was on Cooper's show and asserted that racism had nothing to do with the movement and only a few crazies on the fringe were racist. It turns out that same gentleman had written on his blog that Obama was, um, an Indonesian Muslim turned welfare thug. When called on this, he not only acknowledged that he had written those words, but stood by them.

ETA: Oh, bolded to aid in comprehension:

"I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he's African American,"

Now, compare what he actually said to the way Fox, and yourself, quoted him; "an overwhelming portion of intensely demonstrated animosity" somehow became "an overwhelming portion of similar demonstrations", which had the effect of substantively transforming the meaning of his words.

I'm not dismissing it at all. I'll speak up more readily than most against racism if I see it, as I'm not one to let something go unattended. I'm just saying that I don't see or hear it (myself, I know it's out there, on signs, in Texas, etc.). Like Chandos, I can only talk about what I see and hear. It may have something to do with that "city" effect Chandos was talking about. Regardless of what some may think, I do live in the middle of a major metropolitan area, and that may cool the issue (or just bury it).

Wow, what a load of nonsense. This is the old "I'm correct and if you don't believe in what I'm saying there must be an ulterior motive and/or something wrong with you" speech. Are there some people who hate Obama because he is black, I'm positive that is a true statement. Using a broad brush to paint all of his opposition as racist, may be one of the most racist things I've ever heard.

Is there anyone here who honestly believes that the few conservatives left on this board wouldn't be debating the same points if Hilliary or Nader had won the Presidency? If they had won instead of being racist would we now be called sexist or greenophobes?

If anything I think an argument can be made that Obama won the election because of racism. African Americans voted in record numbers and overwhelmingly for Obama. Does anyone remember those videos when they were interviewing Obama voters and pretending that Obama stood for all of Palin's ideals and the voters had no idea?

Now we have people like Carter who voted for Obama and they seem to want to wear a badge that says "I'm a whitey and I voted for the black guy, that means I'm enlightened and you are a racist". It is disgusting.

Snook -- reread the quotes, you're missing what he's saying. Most importantly, he didn't say "all."

While this point is subtle, I interpreted Carter's comments to actually mean the opposite: That if you hate Obama for being black, it is easier the characterize him as a Nazi/Communist/Muslim extremist. Like I said, it's subtle, but while it doesn't make sense to go from calling someone Hitler to hating him for being black, if you already hate someone for being black, I think it does make it easier to compare him to Hitler.

Sorry about that. Ever since DR explained to me that when one guy heckles the President it means the entire GOP did it, I guess I just see things in sweeping generalizations. :p

That depends on the speaker T2. For example, my oldest sister and I. When she walks into a room that I am currently occupying, she looks right at me as says" What's up, F@g!." My retort is always " Not much, Hag!". Then we laugh. You can tell a joke without perpetuating anything but love, as is the case with my sister and I. DR tells the tale welll enough when referring to the banter between he and his wife. It "can" perpetuate racism, but not always. Between friends, I doubt it ever does, amongst enemies, most likely all the time. It all depends on the tellers "Intent". I believe that NOG was referring to racial jokes with the intent for causing a quick laugh about racism, not perpetuating it.

That's a really lame cop-out. It wasn't just "one guy" off the street somewhere, but one of the high, influential and most of all, visible (not just in the US, we've seen and heard his "YOU LIE!" all around the world) GOP representatives that did it. People expect to hear the GOP party line from him and you know it. Or are you suggesting that the Dems actually expect Wilson to talk for them? Ever?

By dismissing it as illegitimate, is an exercise in education, showing others that it's not accepted. Compassion for the persecuted? By dismissing it, your not showing compassion? I would think it is showing compassion, by not backing it.

It really does amaze, Snook, how you can apply one absurd and unfair standard to liberals and a completely different one to conservatives, and then expect to be taken seriously. Actually, it's not amazing anymore so much as funny and sad. And your reading comprehension needs some work to boot.

Are you serious? Wilson is nowhere near as exalted as you are making him out to be. I seriously doubt that most people outside of his district had even heard of him. I know I hadn't. To say he is highly visible, influential, and that he represents the GOP party line is ridiculous. Now maybe you would have a point if it was said by Palin, McCain, or Gingrich (although they aren't great examples as they aren't in Congress), but this guy? right back at ya.

As to a cop-out that is pure BS. Allow me to quote from the original poster and the first post.

With apologies to Blades that certainly seems to imply that Carter is painting with a very broad brush all Republicans.

And I did stick my tongue out with my post

And as the second and third posters pointed out, and the original poster you just quoted eventually agreed, he didn't mean "all" Republicans.

Maybe I am dense, although I just went back to the earlier posts and didn't see any such agreement. Here is a quote from the link in the first post. Please explain to me how to read this so I understand correctly what Carter is saying.

I could of sworn that people was plural.
