Dissing Kanye? Wow, his support among black voters may dip from 99% to 98% now.

 

Never heard of Beyonce or Kanye West or Barack Obama? Oh man.

Who thinks the MTV awards are a measure of critical recognition anyway? Beyonce still won the Video of the Year. How exactly can she win the (Male and Female) award but not the Female award? I'm pretty sure she's a female .

 

Hey now, most black guys think Kanye's a douche, too.

 

I'll admit that I have a particular hate-on for this sort of thing, but what I'm hearing is that I am supposed to give to benefit of the doubt to a guy when if the situation were reversed, no benefit of the doubt would be given.

 

No one is asking you to give anyone the benefit of the doubt for anything. We're simply pointing out that, other than Taylor Swift being white and West being black, you had no reason whatsoever to think race had anything to do with this and you overreacted. And furthermore, it was you who turned this into an issue of race and got yourself worked up over something that didn't even happen (your "if the situation were reversed" hypothetical), not the imprudent Mr. West or the dreaded NAACP you directed your anger at. That's something you may want to reflect seriously upon.

 

I don't think so, LKD. Pretty much everyone here is in agreement that Kanye is a grade-A douchebag, and most of us would also agree that he's racist*. In fact, that seems to be the general consensus, so my question to you is "what double standard?"

If Garth Brooks crashed on Beyonce's reward, a lot of people would (rightly or wrongly) call him racist, too. The difference though, is that Garth (not a racist) is Garth and Kanye is Kanye. Kanye West putting his foot in his mouth -- again -- by making some half-cocked racially biased comment just isn't news anymore. If Garth did it, it would be news, but it wouldn't be news because he's a white dude. It'd be news because that isn't the kind of thing you would expect Garth Brooks to say. Chris Gaines, maybe, but Garth? Nah.

* He's not a reverse racist, because that's a misnomer. You're either racist or you aren't.

I don't see anything wrong with the President telling it like it is. I am sure that he could have spent the 4 seconds it takes for him to say, "Kayne West is a jackass," on the healthcare bill, but I think that in the long run, those words are more important than the 4 seconds of pondering he could have done instead.

 

Plenty of free publicity for all 4 of the parties involved!

Thanks, Aldeth. I was curious about what they sounded like, but not enough to bother to look them up (I've heard Beyonce before, but I couldn't name one of her songs).

Well, that was horrid. I'm not sure which one was worse -- just awful stuff.

I'm in the middle of listening to the new Beatles remasters (Past Masters) that I picked up yesterday. Wow, they are great, much better than the ones from 86-87. The harsh, cold highs are much smoother and the overall sound is much warmer. The stereo cuts still have that odd imaging, with the drums completely on one side and the lead voice on the other. But it sounds like Ringo is playing his drums in my room.

 

Did Ringo ever play the drums in the studio? Don't you really mean "it sounds like Paul is playing Ringo's drums in my room"?

 

Yes, in fact you can see Ringo playing on the "Let it Be" documentary.

 

I'm not really into modern music either, but I'm not too down on the Taylor Swift song, simply because the video is kind of "real" for her, in the sense that she really is a teenager and has been in high school recently. (Don't know if she was really in the marching band though.)

I don't know anything about Swift's musical talent - I have no idea if she even writes her own music, but she does have a nice singing voice.

 

We don't understand Taylor Swift's popularity because we're not 12-year-old girls.
