Actually, we did get one lander to touch ground, take a few pictures, and send them back before the antenna was melted by acid rain (our best guess, we lost contact quickly). It looks a lot like Mars, only with nasty looking clouds.

This whole thread begs the question: How much should a spouse's actions affect the electability of a candidate? Do you want a loony being "next door" to political power, even though technically the spouse has no authority? Is it fair? Is it just? Would we be hearing the feminists howl if the genders of the two people in this story were reversed?

I think it makes some implication. I mean, the guy did marry her after all. Also, presumably, they are living together, which means he's spending a sizable portion of his day in her pressence.

And Ronnie spent time with Nancy (who was also a loon and often asked psychics for advice). But it didn't appear to hurt the administration much.

I think feminists in Japan have a lot more serious things to howl about than this to be honest. Feminists would be happy enough to even have a female prime minister in Japan, and when they get one I doubt they'll be nitpicking about her spouse since if she's removed her replacement is extremely likely to be male anyhow.

I'd bet there are some cultural differences at work here, I doubt she's under similar scrutiny in Japan that she would be in the west. In fact I would not be surprised if she'd be fairly popular around there. Also I don't think the spouse has much of a difference with parlamentarian heads of government, only if the spouse has some downright scary opinions, like if the spouse is a self admitted neo-nazi. I doubt that would bode well for the candidate. With heads of state however I think the spouse is of greater importance since they are expected to represent the country with their spouse in a different way than a head of government.

Yeah, but they didn't call Ronnie the Teflon President for nothing. Nothing stuck to him.
