For permanent employees yes, if they can attest to being sick they will be paid. As for the freelancers, no. But they have the possibility to work from home, in which case they'd be paid.

Aight, that is one of my pet peeves now that I actually have a full time permanent position. The two first days I am home sick I get no pay, now this has been going for some time now but they also complain about people going to work while sick and spreading the love. That isn't very surprising I am not "paying" a days wages to be sick at home when I can be sick at work. Only time I am going to stay at home would be if I literally couldnt get out of bed.

You don't get sick/vacation time? I thought Europeans tended to get a lot more of that than Americans. I've been at my current job for almost 10 years, and I get 20 days off per year that can be used in case of illness, vacation, personal day off, or whatever. I do not think my case is particularly unusual for full-time, permanent positions. Now if you work part-time or are an hourly employee, then no, if you don't work, you don't get paid.

I hear you joacqin! I'm not permanent at my job, I'm a freelancer. So each time I don't go to work, I don't get paid. That's why I don't really tell anybody when I'm sick. When they notice I already have been at work for a while, so they can't send me home... hihihi

I'm not paid when I'm on vacation either, which sucks. But at the same time, when I'm on vacation I'm not at work, so it's all good...

Well, Aldeth I am a teacher so I have around 13 weeks off per year but I have quite naturally little to no control of when those weeks are. Also, I do get sick pay but not for the first two days so I get 80% iirc of my salary for every day after the first two if I can show the proper medical documentation. If institutions and companies are serious about not having employees spreading disease people should get 2-5 days per year of mild sick leave especially considering that most diseases are the most contagious while they are still just a nuisance and when they really make you ill and forces you to stay at home they often are not even contagious.

To put it briefly I am quite well covered for serious illnesses but for small things I am screwed and staying home to not risk spreading swineflu is a "small thing".

I found out one of my friends got swine flu at the weekend. He works as a trainee nurse and was assigned to shadow a patient who required 24 hour supervision. Nobody thought to mention to him that the reason the patient was in hospital was suspected swine flu and that he should wear a mask etc..

Oh, just to avoid confusion the 24 hour supervision thing would be because the patient was agressive or had some mental history. Obviously swine flu itself doesn't require 24 hour supervision.

[IMG] Why is it called the Swine Flu Epidemic when it isn't actually Swine Flu? :hmm:

How are the "first two days" counted? Two days per school year, or for each time you get sick? If you miss two days because you're sick, and then the next month you get sick again, do the two days reset? I guess I'm asking is do you not get paid unless you miss at least three consecutive days?

And even at 80% pay, that still kind of stinks. If I take a day, I get 100% pay.

I am not really up to date on the rules, not sick that often (actually not been *sick* sick for more than a decade) but the general rule is that they reset each time you get sick. Not sure how it is if you take one day off sick, then go to work and then is sick for a few more days.

For how many days do you get the 100% pay? I am pretty sure I will get the 80% (not even sure if that is the number) for as long as I am sick even if it would turn out to be years.

Well, I get 20 days per year, but you are allowed to carry days over from one year to the next if you don't use them all, so I actually have probably around 50-60 days in total time built up. I will get 100% pay until my days run out. After that, you get 0% until your disability insurance kicks in, which for our company starts when you miss three consecutive months of work. You have to go to a doctor periodically when you are on disability to confirm you cannot go back to work, but you can be on disability for an indefinite period of time. While I have never been on disability, I think it pays you 75% of what you were making. Since there are about 20 works days in any given month, I have pretty much exactly the number of days in time built up to get paid until disability kicked in.

I believe you can be on disability indefinitely, but after a certin amount of time, your employer "can" post your job, but if your a valued employee, most won't. 90 days after her 80% pay period is up, is what HR has told my wife at her workplace. Maybe it has something to do with her contract, not sure...

I had swine flu, it gave me the runs for about a week or more, and the flu symptoms were really mild...or it could have been the copious amounts of cannabis I was smoking to relieve myself of the pain. All in all it was just an 'eh, whatever' experience.
