That is a much more difficult setup for a novice like myself. I could use a draft sheet or something if we were getting players by alternating selections. I have no knowledge base from which to differentiate similarly valued players.

Same players can appear in multiple teams within a single league. The draft-style might be more exciting, because all would have different rosters. But I don't think the proud managers of Cleavage Cup have very similar teams :) .

Not knowing much of the players/league, might become an asset. In Premier League the top goal scorers, for example, change very often. Some promoted teams can play remarkably well, at least some part of the season. So an open mind in picking players could lead to excellent result, so give it a shot!

Ask me, and I'll tell you who I think if you're stuck. You can't really go 'too' wrong that. Just pick what you think.

It's probably going back to the level playing field argument on the other thread but it's almost impossible to do well without picking certain players. Ronaldo for instance the past couple of years completely skewed things but he's gone now thankfully. This effect is really bad given that you get double points for your captain. As a safe bet I'd pick at least one of Lampard or Gerrard (the two most expensive players, 12.5m each) and leave them as your captain for the season.

I'd try and pop a few Chelsea players in. If you can get a spine of Bosingwa, Lampard, Drogba then you've got loads of points there. The skill in this game though is getting an all-round balanced squad with the money you have.

Alright - maybe I'll still give it a go then - although I cannot set up my team from work, so it will have to wait until this weekend.

The way it works in American fantasy football is everyone gets together - say 10 people or so - and you have a draft. You obviously have to set up some order for the selections. The way we usually do it is we write down numbers 1-10 on pieces of paper and stick them in a bowl, and whatever number you pick is what turn you have for your selection.

Once a player is picked, he is gone from the pool. He's on your team, and no one else can take him. Obviously, there has to be a mechanism in place to balance this out, as the guy who picks first would have a huge advantage over the guy with the 10th pick. The way it gets balanced is that in the second round you pick in the reverse order of the 1st round. So the guy with the 10th pick also gets the 11th pick. On the other side, the guy who got to pick 1st overall doesn't get his select another player until the 20th selection - when everyone else has already picked two players.

That doesn't work when the game has thousands and thousands of players worldwide.

If you don't have a team picked by about one hour before the premiership kicks off on Saturday you'll miss out on points for the first week. So you really should try and get it done by Friday night at the latest.

Okay guys 1 day to go. If anyone else wants to join I've put instructions on the first post of the thread, you still have time but it if you don't make a team by 11am tommorow GMT you won't get any points for the first week. This also means you won't be able to make any more free transfers before the start of the season or they will count as one of your 3 monthly transfers.

Would it be possible to get anyone here who has made a team to post with their name, it's just I can't tell who is who in the league atm.

@ Aldeth - the draft system actually sounds really cool, we could try it one year but there would be a few problems. It's tricky to work with lots of players and secondly in fantasy football you get monthly transfers, which could be tricky to work in a draft system.

Niall's Nitwits, #1 with 73 points. And that's with captain Lampard only getting a 2 point appearance score! Apart from himself and Terry everybody else got at least 4 points. I don't see my Stoke/Sunderland block continuing this form into next week against Chelsea/Liverpool sadly.

Half of my big guns didn't do much damage (what kind of a manager starts with Bellamy instead of Tevez?), but at least captain Gerrard and van Persie delivered.

What were you doing picking a Man City striker? They have about 20!

I thought/hoped that City would use 3 forwards and Tevez would be higher in the pecking order..but no.

There was talk that he had a slight knock which stopped him starting? Still, I'm steering well clear of Man City players until I've an idea as to who will be playing. It might take some time for them to gel anyway.

True, but there aren't thousands and thousands of starting players in the premier league... You have what 20 teams with 11 guys on a side? And maybe an equal number of reserves as starters? Sounds like you have a pool of 440 players - about the same as the NFL. And if it's anything like the NFL fantasy sport, there are some guys who you would never pick because they simply aren't good enough. I'd be very skeptical if you're talking about the best premier league players that you'd ever need to use a player pool more than few hundred players deep.

And I got busy this weekend, so I didn't draft a team. Sorry guys.

EDIT: Actually, the NFL has 32 teams with 53-man rosters, so there are 1696 NFL players in the league. However, half of those guys play defense and most fantasy football league use offensive stats only. Further, about 20% of a team's roster are offensive linemen that do not record offensive statistics - they just block. So of that pool of players, only about 30% can be drafted for fantasy purposes, which works out to around 500 guys.

I don't really see your point. The idea is to pick the best team with the money you have. You can't just get a team of all the best players, because you don't have the cash, so it's about getting a balance, and trying to pick a few players who are low in value, but you think will do well. Are you trying to say each player from each team must be picked in at least one team? what's the point in that?
