A true criminal heavyweight, 500-pound inmate George Vera, 25, hid a gun in his rolls of fat. The gun went undetected in five searches.

Thesis: He might just have been too disgusting to search. :outta:

He probably dropped it while cleaning it (since it was unloaded) and it just got lost in there

I guess that "Only in America" obesity exists.

I guess that "Only in America" there are guns.

I guess that "Only in America" there are criminals.

And, of course, "Only in America" would there be an obese criminal with a gun.

Only in Texas would probably have been a bit more apt...

Or perhaps, "only in America" would a 500lb inmate smuggle a gun into prison in his bellyfat?

It's a turn of phrase, T2. Americans are more likely than Europeans to be obese, we send a larger percentage of our population to prison, and we are far more likely to own guns. Put it all together, and we have a silly little story that is far, far more likely to happen in America than anywhere else in the world. Lighten up a little, huh?

I think we can safely drop the "only in America" part of the title as this could really happen anywhere that you have a really fat guy going to prison, obviously. It's just beyond odd that he could be subject to several searches but no proper body search or getting anywhere near a metal detector. That's just... careless? I mean, I can think of another place where he could have hidden that gun...

I feel I owe an explanation.

No, it was not about obesity, or guns, or criminals being American phenomena - but quite simply about the extent of curiousness, or outlandishness if you will ... there are things you only hear coming from there :)

Whatever thread it's in it's a really, really funny story. And it puts the boot to the theory that more searches will result in more safety for the public 100% of the time.

This story has also made me:

A: Want to get back into shape so I never hit 500 pounds and

B: Be even MORE law abiding so I don't get sent to a jail where the guards could be so blasted incompetent.

That is hilarious! Who would've thought to search the fat rolls?!

Why don't they just get some airport style metal detectors?

Prison and jail guards will have to go through a bit more of unhappiness from now on.

It is an really odd story. Though I have to agree with the prior few comments-where was the metal detector?

Low funds would be my guess. The prisons are already overcrowded, adding costs for detectors for something as rare as this instance won't happen...

A hand-held metal detector costs less than a hundred bucks... hardly expensive.

But how many are needed? Ask the warden or Prison admins that are in charge of spending and see their opinion on the matter. Most will tell you they need more manpower 1st, that's where the money is needed. Not on metal detectors for 500 lb inmates. It's much cheaper to just check the inmate thoroughly, with hands and eyes. That is an avoidable cost the prisons don't need.

One or two for each prison. They only really need the metal detector for new arrivals. They won't exactly be able to make guns out of plastic and tinfoil on the inside, so it would be of very limited use inside the bars. Prisoners use "found" materials to craft their makeshift weapons, and a metal detector isn't going to help a guard find a shank made out styrofoam.
