one would expect that in the comparisons showing intended homicide, which both Shaman and I link to, that all the cases where it was coursed by accidents etc. was taken out. especially considering they have different lists for does.
Also I would like a source for your quote, as I couldn't locate it in any of my links

You would be suprised equester, what the people that make lists include & exclude.
    Also using the 3 links(your 2 & shamans) we get the following murders per 100k for the UK, 1.4 | 2.56 2.48 2.03 | 1.6 2.4 2.6

The quote is from les jones
Who is an author, former owner & founder of 56k.com & holds a bachelor of science in biology.

Also parts of the UK are VERY dangerous. According to this article in Longsite, Hulme and Moss Side it is about 140/100k Source

There are similar dangerous places in the US, one of them being washington DC. 2007's rate of 30.8/100k was actually pretty low considering it has been as high as 80/100k during the '90's. DC rates 1960-2007
1 funny thing, DC has(well, up until the heller decision last year) the most restrictive gun regulations in the US but Arlington VA,which is just across the river(less than 2 miles) has just a fraction of the murder rate as DC.
It's murder rate you ask? less than 2/100k. FBI UCR stats
Now i'm not trying to say that this 1 difference between the cities is responsible for the huge discrepancy in the rates but it does make you think a little.
Now DC's population is ~2.5 times that of arlington's but their murder rate is 15 times arlington's. Thats a heck of a jump.

From what I've seen, wall insulation in the UK is a foreign and arcane concept for most. Brick houses (and brick exteriors) are the norm for most buildings in the UK and no insulation ever comes near those. The quality of even newer windows in the UK also leaves a lot to be desired compared to say German/Austrian windows. Installing good new windows in a house with no insulation is a fool's errand anyway - decent windows only really matter when they need to match or exceed the insulation levels of the walls. When the walls are brick and mortar and nothing else, the point is moot, as the heat losses through the walls will be higher than through the new windows. Here for instance, you'll be hard pressed to find any houses built even 30+ years ago without at least 5-10cm of wall insulation. The norm today is several times that.

Anyway, yea, off-topic, it's just something that's grabbed my attention.

Shama, I think that both you and TGS are right, under certain circumstances. The law (the legislature, judiciary, and executive force) has to do something of a balancing act: denying the criminals the freedom to do what they want (crime) while still allowing the regular citizenry the freedom to do what they want (non-criminal). Immigration can be over-regulated and oppressed, or it can be under-regulated and run away; the key is to find the happy medium. Unfortunately, I don't believe for one second that there is any cure-all to crime (short of the total extermination of the human race, but I think that kind of misses the point). What has to be done first in any given situation is to identify what exactly the problem is. Are criminals not being punished? Are criminals being driven to desperation? Is it a clash of oppositional societies?

That definitely is a bit squirrelly if they have different metrics for measuring murders. I think it would be better of they just reported criminal homicides. Regardless of whether the person doing to killing is actually convicted of murder is secondary to the point that someone was killed.

I've been to DC a bunch of times, and my wife's sister and her husband live in Arlington, so I've visited there as well. The must striking difference I see between the two areas is that Arlington seems to consist of a much higher percentage of middle to upper class people. I'm sure there are poor sections of Arlington, but I think the percentage of poor people is much lower than DC. There is generally an inverse relationship between affluence and crime.

Burglars spared jail despite being photographed

Can someone explain to me how the government is serving the people?

They're British Snook. We uncultured Americans just don't understand how their penal code is implemented. That's how they want thier government to serve them. :sarcasm:

EDIT: Didn't we briefly have a sarcasm smiley?
