Yes, same here Gnarf. I can't remember the last time they closed schools here though. I guess the weather isn't as bad as it used to be when I was growing up. Or maybe the fact that I live in the city now and I grew up in the country makes the difference.

Well, to add insult to injury, freezing rain here this morning - not predicted in any forecast, of course, so there are all kinds of wrecks out there and interstate closures and general chaos as my Tennessee brethren and sistern try to drive on ice. As a friend of mine (he was from Maine) once deadpanned to me, if someone tries to tell you he can drive on ice, you'd better watch him, because he'll lie about other things, too.

As for school closures due to cold: part of the problem is that most of our school buses won't start in that weather. Another is that the kids here don't have adequate cold weather gear, not just because of poverty (though that's a factor for some kids) but because they normally don't need it. And I'm told that even when the bus can be started the heaters are so inadequate that the bus interior never warms up enough for the kids' average 45 minute ride to be at a safe temperature.

Hmm, chocolate chip cookies. If only I had some chocolate chips. Oatmeal raisin cookies are a possibility, though.

Babble on, friends. At least I have today off, and I intend to read and play on the computer all day.

In areas where it doesn't get cold very often, vehicles with diesel engines aren't equipped with block heaters...so if it gets *too* cold, no amount of trying will get an engine to start. Around here, the only thing that will cause schools to close are white-out/blizzard conditions. If there's a ton of snow, the school district will request the aid district owned of snow plows to escort the busses. :bad:

Oh glorious day! Oh Happy day! I've finally been able to make my bloody sound card works in Linux. Ok, well it wasn't that hard anyway, just install some dependencies and update the OSS driver to version 4.0 Still, it works! Linux with sound once again!

Edit; Question; May I change my signature at will ? Or is it like the screen name and requires special permission?

I need something interesting to do. I can't go outside as 40c is too hot for me and I seem to have played my games to death.

Well if you don't have air conditioning you might consider finding a good book and sitting in a cold bathtub. I'm not much for my cold Canadian weather, but I'd rather have the temperature -30 outside than +40. At least when it's cold outside you can put on layers and layers of clothing and maintain a decent temperature. When it's too hot you really can't do much except wear the bare minimum of clothing acceptable and hide in the shade. And you still feel crappy for it.

The best weather is a clear day that's 85 degrees, and you're at the beach.

When you dropped it off did they do that backwards, sucky-in whistle thing? Or tut and shake their heads? That's always a good clue that it's gonna be expensive!

I'm with Kitrax on this one. Normally I'd prefer too cold to too hot, but there's a limit, and -30 is this limit!

Nah, I'm with Dragonfly on this one. She's right when it's really hot there's pretty much nothing you can do. The best temperature is 20 C (or 68F) by the way.

Well, I've seen -40C here now and then, now that is Cold.

You're born naked...it's the body's natural state...if humans were meant to wear "clothing" we would have fur. Need any more reasons? :p
