I just read this article and looked it over a few times to make sure it wasn't someone's idea of a sick, sarcastic joke. Before anyone goes at me for being a homophobe for posting this, I want it clearly stated that I know that people from many groups sometimes engage in utterly incomprehensible behaviour. I just want to hear the opinions of some of you on this one -- it utterly blew my mind. Here's the link.

Anyone else have any examples of people trying to contract a fatal disease?

Oh, and what the hell is "condom fatigue"?

[IMG] Condom fatigue is where people keep pushing condoms forward as OMFG THIS IS AWESOME and people just get sick of hearing about it. I know several girls at my last school got pregnant or didn't bother checking their partner used one because they were sick of having it pushed on them constantly that they HAD to use one OR ELSE

I remember a similar report I read a couple of years back about this, can't remember the link, my apologies :o but there were also testimonies of gift-givers as well as admissions from straight men and women joining in, some wanted to do it for revenge motives - giving a cheating spouse HIV to stop them cheating was one example given by a wife.

I've heard some people who want to try and get cancer - some for the sole purpose of surviving, some as a 'legitamate suicide', a rare few who lost loved ones and wanted the same cancer to put themselves forward as test subjects.

I think it is a pity that people feel the need to spread something so destructive to unwilling victims. For those that actively seek it, I still cannot approve and wonder what could lead to such self destructive urges. I've heard some theories such as "suicide is too quick" to demonstrate the suffering the person wants. But I cannot imagine someone wishing suffering upon themselves to such a degree they would give themselves an unforgivable condition.

These people are so incomprehensibly stupid! I've seen someone die from AIDS and I can't understand why anyone would want to go through that. If you're that desperate to die then throw yourself off a bridge. Having somebody close to you die is hard enough, harder when they take their life on purpose but to put your friends and family through watching your body kill itself is horrendus and to deliberately do it is the ultimate in selfishness

Go for ebola, it's quicker and probably just as painful. Seriously, of all the reasons given for so-called 'bug-chasers', none of them sounded like mentally stable individuals.

If you're that concerned about getting HIV, so concerned you'd willingly get it just to stop the worry, how about not having loads of unprotected sex with strangers or near-strangers. I'll give you a hint: if you settle down with one other person only, and you don't have it, and they don't have it, no one's getting it. STDs are only a serious problem for people who have sex outside of a committed relationship.

If you're that desperate for a sense of community, try finding friends instead of bed-warmers. I know, a lot of people look to sex (any kind of sex) to fill loneliness in their hearts, but this is just grade A stupid. Seek mental help, take medication, hell, even self-medicating with alcohol would be cheaper and safer than this.

As for a 'political statement', you're actually hurting your own cause. There are a lot of gay-bashers that point to this exact type of behaviour as support for their causes, and in a twisted sense they're right.

All in all, I think this kind of activity should qualify as constituting a threat to one's self.

As for the 'gift-givers', that seems to me like attempted- to achieved-murder, with possible assisted suicide if they informed the person first. That should qualify as constituting a threat to others. Both groups need to be put away in a psych ward somewhere and given serious psychiatric attention. I mean this seriously and litterally. These people are dangerously unhinged in one manner or another.

A year or two ago when I went to one of my infrequent visits to somethingawful.com I checked out their awful web section. They trawl the internet for the most bizarre funky, freaky forums they can find and this time it was a forum about just this issue. My perception of it was that it was more of a very very twisted fetisch, what I read there was so extreme that it came off more as fantasies than realities.

I am not sure if this phenomenom is more of an internet thing than a real thing. I am sure it exists but I think it is one of those things that if you go to the right websites you can easily start thinking it is extremely common while the reality is that it is very very mariginal. This is all just speculation but it sure comes off as an issue that gets magnified a thousandfold by "internet participators". Everything people write on the internet isn't true.

Honestly, I hope this one isn't true. It's just incomprehensible...

I decided to browse the internet after reading that article and I came across this article written from the viewpoint of a gay man with AIDS. He makes a lot of interesting points about the behavior of bug chasers. http://www.alternativesmagazine.com/15/hill.html

Well, that may be true, as in "any disease is a problem only to those people who've gotten a contagion" -kind of way.

I think this could be a sound basis for a whole new approach into epidemiology.

Iku, my point is more that any disease is only a problem for those that are exposed. Unfortunately, most of our common dieases today don't have easily avoidable exposure circumstances. With the rare exception of a tainted blood transfusion or a truely incompetant doctor/nurse, pretty much the only ways of contracting STDs are through sexual encounters and drug use. Yes, that does still leave rape, but that's also quite rare. My point is, human society could effectively control probably all STDs if we could effectively limit sexual activity to monogamous relations. The beautiful part of this is that it's true in microcosms as well. Meaning, if you don't want an STD, you can just avoid sex with partners you don't know that well and drug use and you're pretty safe.

Barmy, could you elaborate, please? What is it you don't believe?

Dragonfly, that was an interesting article, to be sure, but I see it as being incredibly, stunningly convoluted and bizarre. I mean, one of the headings was "The Benefits of being HIV positive." That sort of thing I cannot come to grips with. But don't get me wrong -- reading it was beneficial.

Well to be honest, I think this story is a load of fictional bollocks that will go away just as soon as it came. What is 'edmonton sun' and this idiotioc journalist? Who is this 1 specified source of information? More to point, who here knows any person who wants to e HIV positive? It's a complete load of ****. I don't care if that gets blocked or what the mods have to say about it. I have no idea what this womans plan is but I know that this 'story' is a load of ****ing ****. It's really embarassing for whoever wrote this rubbish.

I can see the point of some of these older gay men who've lost a lot of friends to the disease feeling isolated, but this is just too over the top...

Edmonton sun is one of two major daily newspapers that is produced in Edmonton Alberta. It is generally respected for its opinions and not at all a tabloid type magazine.

If you really don't believe it, try doing a little research on the net rather than shutting your eyes and pretending it doesn't exist. I wasn't familiar with this issue when I first opened the thread but instead of assuming that is wasn't true I did some investigation.

[IMG] It paints a worrying picture of how marginalized the gay communities are in many places. It's driving them to extremes and total insanity:nuts:. I have no figures to back this claim up, but I doubt there are many such nutters in Amsterdam, compared to less tolerant places. Don't get me wrong, there are some deranged, creepy gays in Amsterdam too, but at least they're not suicidal. My best friend is gay, and among all the weird and wacky stories I've heard, this phenomenon has never come up.

I don't mean to bust your chops here...nor am I disputing the legitimacy of this story...but Wikipedia isn't exactly the best source for "factual" evidence. :bad:

Back on topic...I think these people should be shot. They clearly have a death wish...so let's take care of that the easy way instead of letting them waste doctor's time.

I don't know anyone who does this, or wants to do this. Do you? Does anyone here? Just because some flid somewhere thought they'd create a Wiki entry about it doesn't make it real. I prefer to get my opinions from real life and I've never come across this before. Ever. And I'd challenge anyone here to think of someone they know who has.

Chill out Barmy! It's upsetting and if it's real it's totally insane. But going nuts about it on here isn't going to help
