I've figured out why it is that even when you put a pair of socks in the washing, only one of them comes out!

It's a clever ploy by the sock makers to keep their profit margin up.

What they do is train one of the socks in each pair to return to the manufacturer as soon as it gets wet! As soon as you open the washer door, the sock cloaks itself and flys back out through the window to its maker.

This works very well with baby socks, the young ones must be easier to train or something

I've currently got a lone sock in my drawer, the matching one having vanished at some point during a previous wash. I don't mind it so much anymore though - I buy socks in packs of identical pairs, so after 2 washes were one sock has vanished I can match the 2 lone socks to each other and create a new pair.

When I discover a single, unmatched, sock in the clean laundry, I can usually find the matching (unwashed) sock in my laundry basket at home.

Of course Ziad's suggestion also works wonders for me. :heh:

Matching washed and dried socks can be fun if you have a younger brother and motivation for indoor snowball fights... :p

The number of unmatchable ones never stops to amaze me, though.

    Solutions:

Buy a bunch socks that all look alike. Then even if one buggers off, you can always find another one that looks like it.

Keep your odd socks handy for other purposes, like wearing on a day when you're not going anywhere, wearing under another pair of socks on really cold days, wearing under boots when you're out working...

There is a way to combat this you know Silvery. All you have to do is start wearing mismatched socks and before you know it you will have pairs for everything. Just don't try to start wearing pairs again though or you will mess the whole thing up again.

I don't know. I always thought socks were like pallpoint pens, and had a natural homing instinct, like frogs or cats, to return to their home planet, on the far side of the galaxy, where we get them from.

My solution - I always just end up wearing mismatched socks. People are usually so amazed that I'm wearing shoes in the first place, they don't seem to notice that the socks aren't the same.

If you lose a few, just mix and match. And wear something else that will take the attention away from your feet to other places, like a codpiece :p

Very true. I think either way would take their attention away from you wearing odd socks.

Just had flashbacks to metalocalypse and the diamond encrusted, titanium based codpiece that Murderface bought. One of the funniest things Ive seen :p

Could also wear odd socks and go starkers. Im sure that would have the same effect as well.

That's the truth. I do most of the clothes washing in the house, and the solution my wife and I have come up with is when you take the baby's socks off, stuff the one inside the other. (You have to take them apart to wash them obviously, but at least it keeps them together until they reach the washing machine.)

Overall, I do what most others have said - by packs of the same type of socks, and when you lose one and have an odd sock, hold on to it until you inevitably lose a second one, and then match the two together.

I currently have five different solo socks in my drawer... I should stop buying socks that look different.
