This will be the first PC/Console game to use 4th edition rules.

Bah, pessimists and cynics, all of you! Long live BG! Who cares what the game mechanics are, or what rules it uses? This is about good, solid CRP which we got from the first two, and I am holding my breath with my fingers crossed 'cause I'm excited to see it released.

    Have a little faith ;)

Im pretty sure it will be a horrible game with none of the orignal spirit that made the BG series what it is. The graphics will be quite 'killargh', and it will satisfy the new generation of gamers that were raised on flashy-no-substance games, but Im sure they will kill it like the developers of Thief DS did to the Thief Series, like Bioshock to System Shock + 2, Deus Ex IW to Deus Ex, Fallout 3 to Fallout + 2 etc etc...it happens every single time...

[IMG] :love:please let it be another deep story in the infinity engine... pleasepleaseplease.
don't let some graphics studio take over the project. don't let them churn out more graphic rubbish, like so many of today's games. I hope it's not another of those games that requires a high-end system... I doubt it's possible to make a game that's as deep and immersive as Baldur's Gate 2, and with pretty graphics at the same time. So I'll know at first glance if it's a game i want to buy. ;)If the designers know what's good for them, they'll invest in the story, not more graphics...

I knew exactly what to expect when coming into this thread: Some people looking forward to another great game set in a tried and true world, with one of the best stories in gaming. The majority, though, expecting the worst, and these days, that's just the way people are. Baldur's Gate is one of those games where even when you aren't playing it, you want to go back into that world, even if it's just for a bit longer. I get bored with people saying games will be "an utter disgrace" before they've seen a screenshot, or even someone confirming that it is in production. The Wind Waker had people condemning it for its graphics, because they weren't what people expected. That game was excellent, and the graphics did nothing but showcase the magnificent world that it took place in. Fallout 3 was labeled "Oblivion With Guns" when people heard that Bethesda was turning it into a 3rd/1st person adventure. Fallout 3 is the best game I've played in years. My point is, it's very presumptuous and stereotypical of modern gamers to form an opinion of something before that something even exists. If it really is in the works, I'll play it. If it isn't any good, then no big loss to me. I still have my copy of Shadows Of Amn.

What is high end? I mean ok Fallout 3 on 1680 1050 is pretty high end. I mean what engine can they use. I think the Aurora.(If that is the NWN2 engine that is) Rendered 2d we can forget.

I doubt they'd use Aurora/Electron; for several reasons (NWN1's Aurora is great, but outdated; NWN2's Electron is poorly optimized, full of bugs and lacking in features). My guess would be making a new one from scratch or buying the latest and greatest off the market and then adapting it. Adapting Dragon Age's would probably make sense.

Most likely BG3 will look like world of warcraft (including respawning), the story will be mediocre, like all the crpgs since BG2, and it will use the horrible 4ed rules. Wich is more or less world of warcraft, mixed with pokemon cards + abit of diablo with no blood.

It will be 4ed. Wizards of the coast alles pushes it throught that game companies must use the current rpg edition, when making games based on their products.
So this means that you won`t get to play a gnome or a half-orc. Nor will you get to play a bard, a barbarian, a druid, a monk, or a sorcerer. These classes doesn`t excist in the forgotten realms anymore.

On the other hand, you will get to play dragonborn, and eldarin. Wich are brand new. And the tiefling, of course, wich WoTC has been hailing, like it was a brand new race.
You also get to play evil paladins as well. Or one of the now 6 alignments in the world.
And the best part is that you can stand next to an elf, and your spot and listen checks improves. No need to explain that one.

I have several problems with those two sentences, which is an achievement (though it should have had at least one more period, I'm sure)

Firstly you cannot go from on one hand saying "most likely" then "it will". You have no idea nor confirmation that any of your statements are true, yet you draw what you feel are solid conclusions from said statement.

Secondly, there are more than a few crpgs since BG2 which have had good storylines and excellent playability. I present the Elder Scrolls series, all the NWN and NWN2 expansions, BioShock and Assassin's creed for your perusal as just a few examples. They also (shock horror) had graphics ranging from good to awesome.

Lastly, it is quite obvious that you haven't actually looked at the 4e ruleset to any depth. They have been optimised for adaption into computer gaming with much higher levels of success than 3 or 3.5e, and in essence the very heart of D&D has never been the game mechanics, but the RP that resulted from being hampered by as few rules as possible.

This is a news forum, not the alleys. If you want to throw around assumptions as fact and flame games, go to AoDA. If you're just determined that there have just been no good games since BG2 and nothing will change your mind then please crawl back under the rock you've been living under and let people have their fun without you, as you'll obviously never be satisfied with a game again. The honeymoon's over mate, BG will never be 2e nor will it be IE again. Get over it.

WotC has already released statements that most of these classes will be included later in the extentions books, and thus may be added in later BG3 expansions. not to mention that the game itself has only just gone into development and will probably be several years yet, by which time WotC will probably have released most of the 4e extension books.

Personal attacks never wins discussions, it loses discussions. Please stick to the subject.

That is a matter of opinions. NWN 1 and 2 were mostly just hack and slash games, with mediocre stories. Haven`t tried BioShock, so I can`t offer an opinion about that one. Assassin`s Creed was more or less an action game though, with some rpg elements in it. But I will give you a point for the Elder Scrolls games.

I have read the rules actually. And they are a very dumbed down version of d&d. Most of the bonuses and racial features arn`t explained at all. And alot of them don`t make any sense whatsoever. A good set of rules never hampered any rpg, it makes them better.

Uhm...So if one can`t voice critical opinions about a game, since this is a newsforum, its ok to voice positive opinions about it?
I never said that I don`t like newer games either. I have been more than satisfied by alot of them. Oblivion, Ultima Lazarus, and a bunch more. I never said I was hoping that BG3 would be using 2ed rules, or the IE either. Please read my posts before commenting on them.

I am sure they will release player`s handbook 2-5m during the next couple of years. But seeing how they work nowadays, they will probably have 5th ed coming up, in 4 years or so.

I guess being critical of what WOTC are doing with d&d, isn`t a nice thing to do. Around you.

Actually, we do our best NOT to throw assumptions around as fact or flame in the Alleys, so comments along the line of "I know the game will suck" or "I know the game will rock" are much more fitting for the game and the news forums, if you like. Certainly far less justification is required to present a position like that anywhere except in the Alleys. Uri has jumped the gun on this a bit unfortunately. I'm not really happy with the way he's expressed himself either, but I know that tensions are running high here.

As for you Rawgrim, can you please have the courtesy to start using the quote buttons or tags like I've asked you I think 5+ times so far already? Your posts are very hard to read when you lump in quotes and your own text in the fashion that you've done just above. It requires literally no effort on your part to select the text and click the "mark as quoted" button on the reply page. When you repeatedly ignore such common sense courtesy requests with the excuse that you "forget" (despite seeing it done by everyone else in every other post) I can only conclude that you're doing it on purpose, either to draw attention or to annoy everyone reading your posts. While that may not be your intention, it really does feel like it to everyone reading your posts.

I don't know about that. At the time it was made, the graphics of Baldur's Gate were actually quite good. The epic, immersive Knights of the Old Republic, one of the greatest RPG's ever made, also had extraordinary graphics at the time it was made. I've seen the early screen shots for Dragon Age and it, too, is visually stunning. It is perfectly possible to create an immersive and epic RPG that also has top-of-the-line graphics. The two concepts aren't mutually exclusive by any means.

Eh, as long as it's like BG1 and not BG2, then it should be fine...

In other words: rustic homebrewed tabletop RPG-feel please, not epic Hollywood RPG.

I just wonder what exactly will be BG about the game apart from the title (like Dark Alliance).

If they can capture the flavour and and immersion from the Bg series then that would be a great achievement, but i fear something a little too NWN.
