Dishwasher Use

I think the term "doing the dishes" refers to the entire process of post-meal cleanup: busing the dishes from the table, rinsing them off BEFORE putting them into the dishwasher (so as to avoid any large chunky soggy particles on your dishes post-cycle), wiping down the table and/or counter, and finally actually running the batch of dishes in the dishwasher (if it's full) while scrubbing down any pots, pans, tupperware etc. that aren't dishwasher-kosher by hand, in the sink, to be air-dried on a dish rack or wiped dry with a dish towel.

So to sum: whenever I volunteer to "do the dishes" - which is pretty much every time I don't cook - I fully intend to clean the kitchen at large. Despite my best efforts, I am an unforgivably and irredeemably normal, boring American - so I don't feel presumptuous in speaking for my countrymen on this one issue.

We've never had a dishwasher. Half the time they've seemed more trouble than they're worth. Washing up manually isn't that bad.

Unless it's one in the morning after a Christmas party and you've been told you have to do all the washing up with your step sister before going to bed

 

We've never had one, and when I've been to friends houses who do have one I often find that their glasses and plates are pretty poorly washed...plus washing up by hand is pretty relaxing I find

 

We don't have a dishwasher either, the kitchen is just too small.

 

I've always found tea stains easy to remove strangely enough

Only items awkward to wash (for my family) have been baking trays the grill tray from the oven. Mainly because they're too large for the bowl Sometimes if I wash up I'll have trouble with the pots and pans, my wrists have grown prone to dying on me with pressure nowadays

 

The same here. I never needed one for that reason. Another advantage is that you don't waste much water when you do the dishes the old fashioned way.

 

My mom has a dishwasher and we use it regularly, but not always (sometimes there are simply just a few coffee cups or a plate or something, which is faster/easier to wash by hand right away, then to wait for the yuck factor to hit the roof.)

Personally, washing dishes is the chore I least like - the yuck factor mostly.
Washing stuff in the lab is a whole different matter (chromsulphuric acid is a wonder). Not to mention that once I actually started feeling around for distilled water when I was rinsing some glasses at home...

 

We generally wash stuff by hand, although we have and use a dishwasher frequently.

 

We use the dishwasher most of the time, but there several items which we wash by hand. I also won't run the dishwasher unless it's full -- so if we need the dishes and it's a partial load, they get washed by hand.

 

I don't have a dishwasher so I wash by hand. I collect my dishes in a dish bowl under my sink over a few days and then wash them in one clean sweep. I have enough kitchenware to afford that luxury. I have become very efficient. I wash from right to left, first glass, then plates and forks and spoons and knifes and eventually the rest.

 

I don't have any space in my kitchen to put a dishwasher in. I'd have to renovate the whole damn kitchen to fit something like that in...

 

I live alone in a quite small flat so there isn't much room. Nor do I see any need for a dishwasher for only one person. It would take me more than a week to fill it up.

 

We've always had a dishwasher in all of our apartments, but they were more "Dish-sanitizers" because we *always* had to wash the dishes by hand first. The one in our house now is a turbo-powered, food killing machine! I've put dishes in there with 2 day old spaghetti dried on to it and the dish came out spotless.

 

I don't have a dishwasher and I'm moving out in a few months, so there seems to be little point in getting one now. This may change once I find out where I'm moving to and for how long.
