game keeps locking up

    that worked!! had to turn it almost all the way down. but the game works now! thanks a ton! much appreciated :cool:

    ID2 keeps chrashing at the character creation screen

    Basically the subject tells it all. I can get about 80% through the character creation screen (right during the change appearance screen) and the game crashes. I tried setting the game to full, I reinstalled it 4 times, my pc is running at 3.3 ghz, have plenty of hard drive space and ram (320gb hard drive space and 2gb of ram), and i have the latest direct x. I've also tried playing with the premade parties, the game plays normal but every time i go into the inventory screen it does the same crash. It just says icewind dale 2 had a problem and needs to shutdown and the error report reads C:docume~1\owners\locals~temp\267f_appcompat.txt. I also just recently tried to turn the hardware accelerater all the way down and disable direct draw and still no luck.

    its funny because i have Icewind dale 1 and it works fine and i have higher end games like world of warcraft and guild wars that work just fine.

    someone please help maybe i'm overlooking something.

    P.S. I have windows xp home edition.

    i have my hardware acceleration 1 notch from the left and the game runs great. have you tried each "notch"? i went through all of them but only the 2nd one from the left works.

    Yeah I have tried all of them but am i supposed to try all of them while in 16 bit mode or 256 colors or 32 bit? And am i supposed to disable direct draw from the dxdiag menu first then do the hardware acceleration slider down or leave it on then slide it down? Thanks for all your help I've learned more about fixing this problem from reading your thread than talking to tech support lol.:p

    Oh and I almost forgot I have an Nvidia Geforce 7900 GS 256mb card (if that helps) and I don't know if i'm supposed to disable or enable write combining.

    it didn't matter for me if it was 16 or 32 bit mode. i don't have direct draw disabled either. i'm not sure what "write combining" is. never heard of it sorry. as for it being an Nvidia video card, i can't say anything about that other than i am using an ATI card. the only other thing i can think of is to try older video card drivers. it didn't work for me but maybe it will for you. good luck. i know it must be aggravating not being able to play. i know i was mad that i finally got it and couldn't play :mad:
