The cheap flights would most likely be from Luton or Stanstead, both some ways to the north of the city. However, you will have a decent choice of destinations for cheap flights from some of the more northerly airports too (East Midlands, Manchester, Liverpool etc).

If you're not tied to anywhere in particular go for the decent jobs, in most cases you won't find yourself too far from somewhere good to live (and with lower living costs than London). As England isn't a particularly big country, most areas won't be too far from passable transportation to further afield. Just avoid places such as Cornwall (which is very nice, but rather out of the way).

For Engineering, don't discount Dundee, the guy who invented TFT monitors came from Dundee... And Dundee is an awesome city.

Hmmm...Dundee, Glasgow and Edinburgh all do seem good :p

So living costs in Scotland are cheaper, at least, than in London, right?

And I noticed that British colleges all seem to have a month-long gap in their spring semesters... Is that entire chunk easter break? What do students usually do then?

Yeah, that's Easter. Barmy is pretty accurate- most students (or the ones I knew, at least) went home during the Easter break to meet friends they hadn't seen for a while. I guess some of the later-year students might have been more inclined to stick around the city, but I'm not sure.

As far as I am aware, living costs are cheaper in Scotland than London. Edinburgh is probably the most expensive Scottish city to stay in, but it is still better.

Anywhere in the country is cheaper than London. Scottish cities are around the same price as the other English cities. Edinburgh is slightly more expensive, being the capital, but it's not too bad. Average rent for a room is £300 but you can find some rooms for £250 (and they're still better than the £400 closets you'd get in London). Glasgow will be around the same, Dundee possibly a bit cheaper. The nice thing about Scotland (especially Edinburgh) is that everything will have student prices: buses, concerts, cinema, pubs, even restaurants. You'll generally get a 10-15% discount, but half price is not unheard of.
