I am running on Windows XP. I have the Automatic Updates, and have never had a problem before.

Today, I installed the updates (using "express install") and after rebooting the computer, I couldn't connect to the internet with either IE or Firefox.

I used the "System Restore" option, which is how I'm posting now.

BTW, I reproduced the problem already, and it's definitely part of this update.

How do I determine which part of the update it is (it says there are 4 updates), so that I can install the other 3 without an issue?

    TIA

Additionally: Now when I open Firefox, there's about an inch-high white bar that I can't get rid of at the bottom of any window I open up. It's very annoying, and strange as well.

BTW, I thought it might be useful to list the updates:

1)Security Update for Windows XP (KB951748)
    2)Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (KB953432)
3)Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB953465)
    4)Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2008 (KB890830)

Yes, I had the same problem. After installing the latest updates, today, I could not log onto the internet from any browser I have installed. Thusly, I just used the restore point to fix the problem. I think there is a problem with MS's latest update. I will wait until they fix it. And I am running ZA as well. Thanks for the link, BTA.

I wasn't able to use the net wirelessly at all 2 days ago after an update, ended up fixing itself up after using the cable for a bit. Maybe another update got pushed, or maybe my wireless connection was just being fruity.

See people, this is why we turn AU off. :)

Perhaps M$ finally realized that the internet cannot be made "safe" so their new update (KB951748) just disables your computer from connecting...therefore keeping you safe.... :skeptic: :rolling:

So, what's the solution? Do I just not install these updates?

BTW, any help with the Firefox "white bar" on the bottom? I've also lost my Google Toolbar in Firefox.

First, stop using the Automatic Updates. Go to your Control Panel and turn it OFF. Don't download, don't install later, OFF. If you're really worried about Windows Updates, go to the site (http://www.update.microsoft.com) directly and download only what you want/need/understand.

Secondly, try Google. Chances are pretty good that whatever your problem is, somebody else has it too and/or has fixed it.

Try (http://promptanswers.com/question/20080324094744AAVOFTw.html) this solution to your Firefox problem. I hope it works.

Remember, in the future, don't download updates you're not familiar with. You wouldn't download unknown programs from another software developer; why do it with Microsoft?

Well, I'm naive. I assume that if MS is offering an update to one of its own programs, then I am probably safe to install it. Although I admit that I generally don't think about potential problems regarding compatibility with other programs.

You can dowload all the updates and then uninstall KB951748 in add/remove programs in your Windows Control Panel. Generally, you need those security updates to protect your PC from hackers. And Spunlge is correct that "typically" there isn't a problem with most updates from MS. This is the first issue that I've had in a few years of updates for XP.

Btw, according to Zone Alarm - Check Point Software - they are working on the issue. :)

The link I posted above purported to have a workaround from the ZA people. I suggest if you want the security update that you read that for the solution so far.
