i finally got the game in the mail. woohooo! installed it. patched it. and started playing. got the characters made. ran around town a bit. made it into the warehouse. but now any time i hit the Esc key the game locks up. it does it at other random times as well. i've already tried different drivers. from the newest to the oldest i could find starting at 6-11 up to 8-6.
the video card is a ATI RadeonX1650 pro. i tried updating my motherboard's chipset drivers but they want me to d/l some program that cost around $30.

anyone have any ideas i could try? this is really aggravating! i FINALLY get it and now i can't play :(

by locked up you mean the screen is frozen?

You could try the slowdown fix, but I doubt that's the problem.
If BG2 works on your system, IWD2 should probably work too.

Try altering the graphic settings, maybe you need 16 bit instead of 32 bit or something. Check out all the options in configuration, the solution's probably there.

Well, i know that some people have problems with AGP cards...

if your motherboard cant support the AGP level of your card you will get computer crashes and lockups due to voltage insufficiencies...

Thats about all i can think of really.

Turn all the options down and try the nvidia fix stuff maybe just in case its something similar (naturally its not an nvidia card)

now i am totally baffled. i just played BG2 for over an hour with not problems at all.
yes i mean frozen. and i've tried both 16 and 32 bit settings.

well i have an nvidia card i'm gonna try but that will have to wait til tomarrow. don't feel like doing it tonight :p

well i tried the nvidia card and found that it wouldn't even work in the computer. my monitor kept saying "no video" so i guess the card is bad and that's why i have the ATI card. hmm. don't remember it going bad. oh well.

one thing i have noticed while playing BG2 is that it locked up when i "unlocked" the 3 seals in the watcher's tower. the level right before demogorgan's area.
gonna start a party from the start and see what it does.

is there a way i can test my motherboard to see if it can handle my agp card? seems like it should since it runs BG2.

best bet is to look at the specs of your motherboards model (generally posted on the website of the manufacturer of the MB or the computer). In my example, the friend was trying to use an AGP 3ish vold in an AGP 1.5ish volt slot >_< confusing i know...

well according to the specs on the boxes my motherboard supports 2.1gb/s and my vid card is:

    agp 8x (0.8v)
    agp 4x (1.5v)

shouldn't the higher the agp x number make the voltage higher not lower?

Your motherboard should list whether it supports AGP 4x or 8x.

Not all technology works like that. Something about voltage and current and frequency conversions and all that fun stuff.

is there a VGA port on the back of the motherboard (meaning you dont NEED and video card to see an image, but the built-in video support generally sucks).

the built-in video port is linked to an "on-board" video chipset....basically the motherboard has a video card built-in

    nope. no on-board plug :(

so i started over and made my way to the watcher's tower. got all the way to the bottom.
well i turned off direct draw and it work fine. all 3 seals open and i got down to demogorgon and killed him. so i guess direct draw does matter with some things that are "older". i tried the same thing with ID2. it allowed me to save and then move around town a bit more before crashing again :(

sorry this is more BG2 related than ID2. gonna try ID2 again and see if i have any luck...

damn! same thing. any other ideas? it's like getting the first piece of steak and then they take it away. man i want more!!

cant think of anything really. You've tried turning the settings all the way down and you've tried going through the other graphic card issues...What version of DirectX do you have?

make sure you have the newest version (9.0c or 10 depending on OS)
make sure you have write access to the folder
    try turning hardware acceleration down

well i still have direct draw turned off. i get to run through the wearhouse but it crashes (no lock up) after a short period of time or if i look in a backpack :(

thanks for trying. i greatly appreciate it :)

oh. if i ever get the game to run, how do i enable it so the party attacks whenever they see an enemy? in BG2 it was turning on a script but i can't find the option.

these are probably dumb questions but
    1) do you have to have ID1 installed in order to play ID2? i know you start from level 1 in both games but i'm still at a loss as to how to get the game to run.

2)what about directx? do i have to use the directx8 that comes with the game? or will directx9 work?

i've even tried d/l the game and running it with a no-cd crack with no luck. i guess i am destined to not play this game

To turn hardware acceleration down using Windows, make your way to the Control Panel (START>Settings>Control Panel). Double-click "Display" and click the "Settings" tab. Click the "Advanced" button and then the "Troubleshoot" tab. It's a slider. Just keep sliding it down until you find something that works for you. Just don't forget to slide it back up after play.

Also, you might want to disable "DirectDraw". I have graphic problems in my ID2 that crash the game and this makes that go away. To disable "DirectDraw" using Windows, it's START>Run; then type "dixdiag" (no quotes). Click the "Display" tab and disable DirectDraw. Once again, don't forget to enable it after play or other games won't start.
