Hello there. I had a clean, ToTSC install, and decided to get some cool mods for BG1. Found quite a few, and even though I am quite busy playing Easy TuTu (with lots of mods ofcourse!) I tried BG1 with mods for nostalgie.

I noticed that Imoen earned experience for opening locks, IIRC this was not so in vanilla BG1. She got 200 XP, which is kinda massive for BG1, and, considering the frequency of locks and traps, I gather it would be pretty unbalancing in the long turn, giving me tons of extra and easy XP. Now, TuTu also gives XP rewards but something minor like 20 xp. 200 xp per lock is definitely too much! I did not check scribing scrolls, but I suspect they may give massive XP (1000/spell lvl) too which would be disasterous in a low lvl game as BG1, and I can not allow that.

Do you know which mod causes this and how can I fix it? Is there a file I can edit (via notepad, for example) which shows thieving XP rewards?

I have Ease of Use, Grey Clan ep 1, FoTD, UB, and Slime Quest installed.

Until this problem is sorted out I will keep playing my Easy TuTu game (which I am having so much fun with, BTW), and stay away from BG1. (which would be a shame, I value BG1's authency and feel even though I am a core-Easy TuTu and BG2 fan.)

    TIA.

I always thought 20xp was really low, 200xp would make much more sense., and becomes pretty negible once you get to a higher level.

200 exp is way to unbalanced. Let's say you play a solo thief, there are probably 10-20 chests locked in candlekeep which garantuees you at least 2 levels. From there you go straight to the Friendly Arm Inn, Beregost and Nashkel. Between those three there are at least 100 chests still locked, which would mean about 20000 experience, which is about one fourth of the total experience in de vanilla game.

Heck I would be willing to bet that you could easily hit the level cap, without doing any quests or killing monsters, by just opening chests which net you 200 exp.

Thats if you actually want to go round doing them all, most chests contain minor things. Plus your looking at it from a powergaming point of view, i would actually feel sorry for someone who goes round unlocking every chest just get XP. Also while I got nothing against Soloing (something i regularly do myself), BG is originally intended for you to take a party anyway, so that XP gets spread around.

With that POV, what difference should it make how much XP is awarded for opening chests?

I think it should be 20%, not 10%. 10 XP for opening a chest is kinda low. 20XP makes a little more of an impact, but it's still not unbalancing.

Well I always open any chest in the game and that is from the very first time I played the vanilla game. Of course I am a collector. I have this obsessive habit to find as much gems, scrolls and potions as possible and not to use them or sell them so I can just enjoy watching them stack:D

Err, Felinoid, I am afraid there is no such file in my BG1's Override directory. There are XPLVL and LVLCAP files but no XPBONUS as far as I can see. So, any suggestions? (there is such file in BG2 and TuTu, but not in BG1.)

Hmm. That may not mean anything. Have you looked at the 2DA files list with Infinity Explorer? If it's a fundamental change to the game, an unedited XPBONUS.2DA wouldn't show up in the override folder. You could then extract and edit.

Beyond that, the best bet would be to look for which mod did it and if you can uninstall that component, or even the whole mod if necessary. We can already rule out Grey Clan unless they've changed it recently (I've tested it before) and possibly EoU (I always have that installed and have never seen that).

I'm fairly certain that this is a core fix in the Tutu fixpack. I'd start my search there.

There is no xpbonus.2da in BG, mainly because you don't get any XP for picking locks or learning spells under the BG engine. It's a new feature that was added for BG2--so unless you're playing one of the conversions (Tutu or BGT) you won't be seeing any bonuses at all.

... unless you're playing BG with Fields of the Dead (the thieving XP bonuses are noted in the readme), and are presumably done via script.

That would likely be the answer, then. :)
