I'm not kidding, several sources, incl. BBC and Aljazeera, have already reported that the islamist most commonly associated with the Iraqi anti-government forces - Abu Musab al-Zarqawi - has been made to step down. The primary reason is that most of his Iraqi compatriots were not too happy about his tactics - particularly strikes in neighboring Islamic countries - and that a foreigner has been speaking for the whole of Iraq.

So what do you think, how will this impact Iraq?

    In truth, probably very little.
I wonder if he's been actually been killed in an air strike and this is their method of explaining why he's no longer making statements.

According to these sources, he will be sent on operative duty... frontlines, as it were.
So he may be in no position to make statements really soon, indeed... If, of course, the whole thing is not a farce and he is not dead already. That is certainly possible, although they could play the martyrdom card.

Just how much of this is true?

Israel claimed they killed Zarqawi years ago. He has mysteriously turned up in various countries in recent years, basically wherever the US needs a boogie man.

There is as much evidence of this guy's existence -- let alone him being the ring-leader of Iraqi insurgence -- as there was of the WMDs.

Remember kids, don't believe everything you read in the newspaper.

Hmm. Wonder what his severance pay will be. 2 and 1/2 virgins maybe? Does he get to keep the beheading machete, or is that al Qaeda property? Will they revoke his company health club privelages? What about his dental plan? If he loses that he may end up looking like Muktada el Sadr, and homeboy has some BAD teeth. Since they sacked him, is he not required to list al Qaeda on his resume? It doesn't sound like Osama's going to give him a very favorable reference.

So many questions arise when you get fired.

Your implication is that his presence is being "invented" by the US. Does this mean that the Muslim extremists are happy to play along with whatever game the US is playing? Aljazeera have reported his presence as well after all. Maybe it's all a big global conspiracy, and in fact the US are behind the muslim extremists in order to control the populace.

I try to believe very little from any form of press outlet, but you have to get information from somewhere. In this instance, it's the source that is suspect. What is his agenda? What advantage does he have in lying? Is it for personal attention? Is it mis-direction? Is is damage limitation? As DR says, far too many questions which will never be answered.

well, technically he hasnt done anything except tell people to do what theyre doing already, so if he is a creation of the US it doesnt matter to the muslim extremists

True, although there is the problem of what happens when the US decides to have him say something the extremists wouldn't want. Do we have a battle of the Zarqawi clones then?
