[IMG] I'm finally setting up my new W8 computer and on my old XP computer I had a bunch of programs that have served me well, but today there are likely good free / open source apps that I could replace them with that are just as good.

What I'm interested in particular to replace with good free alternatives:

    • Dreamweaver
    • Total Commander
    • mIRC
    • Nero
    • PowerISO
I realize that some of those likely don't have any great alternatives (as I've tried a few over the years and were usually disappointed) and I'm just going to buy them if that's still the case... but I'd like to give open source stuff a try first.

If you use any other free apps that are great, let us know about them too!

Why not just install them on the new machine? I still use Office 2003 because I dislike the new "ribbon" interface. Just because it's old doesn't mean it's useless. If it still does the job you want it to do, there is no reason not to continue using it.

I like trying new things every once in a while... I've realized that I've been using a lot of the same apps for over a dozen years so upgrading to a new OS is a good time to get out of my comfort zone. ;)

Office for example used to be a must-have, but I've installed OpenOffice a few years ago and for my needs it easily replaced Office.

Runs or loads? The Java-bloat does make it load a long time (at least on my old computer, I expect it'll be much better on my new one with an SSD drive) but that's about the only downside I've encountered...

If you enable its start-up helper it should load much faster... makes sense to always have it loaded if you regularly use OO.

Use libreoffice instead of openoffice as its by a lot of the people who left oracle becuase they didnt like what was happening. For burning and ripping isos use imgburn I use chatzilla as my irc client its not nearly as full featured as something like mIRC but it is open soruce and crossplatform since its a firefox addon.
