But now we know that they knew they were full of it, too.
Emphasis mine. Now raise your hand if you feel confident these people have any credibility when it comes to assessing Iran's threat. Anyone? Beuller?

The Russians took away and hid all the WMDs! Everyone knows that now! They've got these top secret cloaking devices that make them invisible! They only have to decloak when they fire... but I heard rumours that they're already working on an improved prototype that'll be able to fire without decloaking! It's all TRUE!

Actually, when you think about it, why would there be any need for Iraq to develop biological weapons in trailers of all places. I don't see the advantage of having a mobile biological weapons production facility. Biological weapons are specifically developed so that they remain potent outside of laboratory controls, so these were really amateurish weapons if they were producing them in trailers. Wouldn't it be much safer (and easier to conceal) if you produced biological weapons in some type of production facility that also produced something other than biological weapons (as in a front to conceal the manufacture of the biological weapons). The more I think about, the mere idea that Iraq would have mobile trailers without a large scale laboratory facility is ridiculous.

    @ Tal

Have the ruskies been hanging around with the Romulans again? :heh:

    @ Aldeth

I think you're doing a wonderful job of illustrating why this claim was so stupid to begin with. I can't imagine any weapon deadly enough to be "a smoking gun in the form of a mushroom cloud" (we love ya, Condi!) could be produced in such a crude manner. If so, WMD would be much more prevailant throughout the world.

has anyone seen the size of a missile designed to deliver WMD? these would have to be humongous trailers, we would see them from orbit

You can read a license plate from orbit if you have the right technology, and the size of a missile depends on how far you want to shoot it.

Also, when you have inspectors running around your country poking their noses where you don't want them, it would behoove you not to have fixed installations if you wish to hide what you are doing.

Not that I'm implying the trailiers are anything more than indicated above. Just that it's not so unreasonable to think such a thing was possible.

Rephrasing BTA's argument: It was clear that there were no fixed bioweapon labs; so they have to have been in trailers :shake:

And without fixed locations, you don't have the ability to make large scale amounts of much of anything from a trailer. Obviously, these fixed facilities would have covers for some legitimate business so that inspectors would be less inclined to have a looksie. You would not start a company called "Iraqi Chemical Weapons" and put a neon sign out front.

Come now, do you think the inspectors are fools or just incompetent? You think they only inspect facilities that advertise they're doing something illegal? Any facility with equipment capable of producing illegal arms would have been inspected multiple times.

for a country which is being watched by the worlds most powerful countries these trailers would have been spotted by any number of agencies, and lets be blunt they would be suspicious as hell.

They sure looked to be BOTH prior to the invasion of Iraq. It turned out they were neither.

No, in fact, I said you would NOT do that. Perhaps I was being overly dramatic. What I'm saying is you would be manufacturing the weapons in a place that one wouldn't think would have to capabilities to produce weapons. And such a facility would actually produce what they claimed they were producing, but in the back of the factory... Do you really think that the inspectors were so flawless in their work that they checked every possible area in Iraq that could have been producing weapons? Yeah, they looked in all the obvious places, and they probably checked placed that said they made things like "goat's milk" because they have the tanks necessary to produce chemical weapons, but to think they looked everywhere is preposterous.

See that's what I mean by thinking they were incompetent. Why do you suppose inspections take so long? They have to look at all kinds of information about what equipment is bought where and is in use where etc.

If inspections are as useless as you claim, that they could not uncover clandestine fixed installations, there would be no point to them. The only reason inspections are done is that you think they are not telling you the truth about what's going on, and are trying to hide things from you.

Umm, anyone else know how big Iraq is? Anyone else know how much of it is uninhabited desert? We're talking about finding trailers that, by themselves don't looks suspicious, in the middle of Arizona or Utah. And did anyone else read further about the Iraqi defector who described portable bio-weapons labs in detail? He may have just been feeding them what they wanted to know, but there was no way to know that at the time.

Which is precisely why the weapons inspectors should have been allowed to finish their jobs before declaring war.

Umm, anyone else suggest that more than 130k troops might be needed to police a violently overthrown former dictatorship the size of California? Shinseki for one and he got fired. Stuff happens.
