I got some time to do some serious play this weekend. I just finished Trynton and everything that goes on in the trees. My coup was finally being able to beat Don Barlone and get the cane of corpus for my faerie ninja. Now I'm hiking it back to Arnika and then to the northern wilderness. Of course once again the monsters are ramping up because of my level. However, my ninja with the cane is now a death machine, my monk has racked up a huge kill count, the bard with all of her musical goodness is great against mobs, the psionist is driving mobs to insanity and then ego whipping them, the preist stands around and blesses and heals, and my mage launches all sorts of deadly spells. In other words "bring it on"

I don't know if anyone else kept playing, but I just finished the game. I had a grand olde time and would like to thank the posters who reminded me of this game. It is a shame Sir-Tech imploded and we will never see another Wizardry.

My Wiz 8 party went something like:

    Hobbit Samurai
    Elf Ranger
    (Female) Hobbit Gadgeteer
    (Female) Hobbit Bard
    Mook Psionic
    Gnome Alchemist

The RPC's I used most of the time were Vi and RFS-81.

    Yes, I know, powergaming.

The Wizardry series has always bugged me a bit, what with all the muskets and laser rifles and light sabres. If you can get past that, it's reasonably entertaining.

Wiz 8's character voice sets were always pretty annoying to me too. Few fantasy-type voices and instead 20th century crap like New York cab driver and Russian femme fatale.

I'm tossing a little resurrection powder on this thread as I'm considering replaying this game. Three years is way too long to return to the goodness known as Wizardry 8. Now if I can only find the CDs and the time.

Wizardry 8 was a very fun game for a while, but as your levels increased, the enemy levels increased, the ammo needs increased (ranged weapons are very important, and ammo weighs), it just got more annoying. I suppose I could see a heavy-magic party making it late-game (though the beginning would be harder).

Well, I was never above a good save game editor to restock on supplies. :)

I have played thru this game numerous times, one of my all time Favorites! With the right builds, missles were not a necessity. Though a good Ranger Build was pretty devastating. I prefered Monk, Samurai, Rogue/Fighter, Ninja, Priest(Bishop) and Mage. Criticals galore. Dualling the Priest to Bishop early was essential.

I remember playing the very first Wizardry on NES. That game hooked me instantly.

I have played thru every Wizardry game in the series. Starting back when I was just a wee laddie....:) All of them were well worth the time and effort. If a game manufacturer started pumping out games like the Wizardry series, even with the old, shoddy graphics, I would buy them instantly.

Even after finishing with a Ninja last time, dual-wielding darts and shuriken, I've never found her particularly deadly. Sure, she was doing a decent number of instant kills and had a lot of attacks, but my Samurai and Ranger were scoring about the same instant kills and did a lot of regular damage, to boot (Muramasa!). Am I doing something wrong? I'm pretty sure I developed her perfectly, pumping points into Instant Kill, Stealth, Throwing Weapons, and Dual Wielding, but but the results were disappointing...

Not that I can see. The simple truth is, Critical Strike has a rather low chance of activating, thus it's pretty unreliable. If I'm not mistaken (haven't played the game for quite a while) a Ninja with 125% Crit (100%+bonus) has only a 25% chance of instakilling an opponent. You can try to improve the chance by using death imbued darts/daggers/shurikens/bullet stones or melee weapons (though I can't remember whether or not you can find magical Kama in the game).

My favourite party almost invariably features a female Gadgeteer, a female Bard (very important that these two characters be females), a Ranger, a melee character and two dedicated spellcasters. I'm not a great fan of Bishops. They have horribly slow leveling.

That is the one where your Werdna? I believe that would be a no, it is the only game in the series that I didn't finish. It's been a LONG time since I played that one. Though I have replayed 1-3 many times on an old PC that I keep around for my old games. This makes me want to dust it off and start hunting down Werdna again.:)

Wew, thanks for the answer. I don't have to start worshipping you just yet :p

Wizardry 4 is by far the hardest and most unforgiving game I've played. I love it, in a masochistic kind of way, and I keep telling myself I'll finish it one of these days :shake:

Yep, your just asking for trouble in that one. Exercise in futility, but I do remember spending countless hours on it. Back then, when I was single, I never gave up on a game, until I encountered that one. I was defeated.
