I've decide to give Ubuntu a try, so I download the ISO burn it to a CD and boot. Everything runs fine, the OS finds my wireless card and even the network I'm normally using under windows XP. Only while in Ubuntu I cannot connect to it. Maybe it's because I've not install it yet or whatever. I know nothing about Linux and I don't know what to do. My computer has a Linksys wireless-G PCI card and the router is a Lynksis wireless-G broadband 2.4 Ghz router model WRT54GS. Is there any way I can have internet under Ubuntu?

Edit; I've also posted the same exact post on Ubuntu's offical forum.

    1. What chipset is your wireless card using? You can find out with the command 'lspci'.
    2. What does the command 'iwconfig' tell you?
    3. How is the wireless configured? What encryption are you using and so on...

Unless you're overly fond of Gnome (the default desktop environment of Ubuntu) you might want to try PCLinuxOS instead. It is much friendlier out of the box to people new to Linux. The only downsides are that it doesn't have corporate backing (usually not an issue for desktop users) and is only available in English.

You don't have to install it, just run the livecd and see if it has better luck detecting and connecting to your network. It also has a nice control center that makes it much easier to configure network stuff than what Ubuntu has.

I'm just suggesting this since you said you were new to Linux and so my guess is that you picked Ubuntu because it is the most hyped about one.

Btw, you might want to take a look at distrowatch.com. They have lots of nice information about almost all existing Linux distributions.

If you know what your wizard friend did, you might as well post it; it could help someone else.

Well, the problem was kinda stupid, as far as I know he only manually inputed the IP adress the router gave me in a DCHP connection. Well I *think* that's what he did.
