As I've said in dmc's desktop thread, I'm thinking about getting a new computer as well. Rather than cluttering up dmc's thread with this question, I thought I'd start I'd start a new one.

I've read recently that a lot of older games aren't compatible with the 64 bit version of W7. For example, this site lists Oblivion and Diablo 2 as incompatible (the latter might be relevant for dmc).

Because I'm usually 2-3 years (at least) behind in the games I play, obviously this is a concern for me. I also play BG2 occasionally, and I'd hate to be unable to play that. The problem is that the machines I've been looking at (basically from newegg) all have the 64 bit version.

So what's the deal? Does "incompatible" mean "won't run", or does it just mean "not tested"? Has anyone else had issues with running older games with the 64 bit version? If so, did you get it to work eventually?

    Thanks for your help.

Well, Diablo 2 runs well with Windows 7 on my computer.

Features like "Run as Administrator" and the compatibility settings are a huge, no, vast, improvement over (utter lack of) compatibility of older games under Vista 64 (the horror, I tell you!). I usually get my legacy games to run on Win7. Haven't tried real oldies like BG or BG2 though.

32bit windows supports 16 and 32 bit applications. 64bit windows supports 32 and 64 bit applications.
Older 16bit applications like old dos games, you can run through an emulator like dosbox, in windows 64bit.
The games you've listed are 32 bit to my knowledge, but still a bit old so you may encounter some problems, but it should work.

I have Win 7 64 on the laptop I just bought and it runs D2 fine. . .

Haven't tried any of the BG games yet, though.

dmc, I have had no problems running the BG games or the IWD games on Win7 64 bit. And like you D2 runs just fine too.

No problems running TES IV. In fact, I ran the hell out of it on W7 64-bit with no problems. I ran it with all the expansions and tons of mods. No issues, except to change administrator rights to install some mods.
