I'm trying this game again after some years, but when I try to install the Widescreen mod, the gives me an error about the chitin.key file.

I was wondering if this is because I haven't done the full install yet...I was a bit confused about that actually, because for cd2, there is a directory called cd2, but for cd1 there isn't. Do I just make a new directory and copy and paste everything (including the setup files) in there?

Are you using the 2-CD or the 4-CD version of the game? And if using the 4-CD, have you applied the official 1.1 patch?
