Why some spells cannot be learnt?

I got Imoen who's a dual class enchanter, and Dynaheir who's an invoker. Both reached the experience cap max. I have ToSC installed

How come there are still some spells that both of them cannot learn. Eg, Mental Domination (Enchanment/Charm), Emotion (Enchanment/Charm), Protection from Lightning (Abjuration) ?

This is surely not due to opposite schools, as Imoen got some 4th level Enchanment/Charm spells learnt, so as Dynaheir with Abjuration spells.

    Anyone knows why?

According to the manual (p140) the opposite school for an Invoker (Dynaheir) is enchartment/charm & conjuration/summoning. So that would explain why she is unable to learn the enchartment/charm spells you mention.

The opposite school for Enchanter (Imoen) is Invocation, which doesn't seem to apply to any of the spells you mention.

Hmmm. Anyway, there is another possability. Are they not allowed to learn the spells or are they 'failing' to learn the spells. learning a new spell is not guaranteed but dependant on a %chance. With an inteligence of 17, both girls get a 75% chance of succefully learning a spell. This chance can be boosted by taking a potion to boost their inteligence. At 20 it is 96%.

Opps - I've just been trying to find the spells you mention in the manual to check their schools. I can't find them in BG1 manual (maybe you are using ToSC) but in the Icewind Dale manual Mental Domination and Protection from Lightning are both priest spells. Sometimes you will find them on scrolls which a priest or druid can use but a Mage will not be able to learn them.

PS I've just found my ToSC leaflet and the same applies - they are both priest spells.

I support the pries spell theory. Clearly, mages have trouble reading cleric language :D

Thanks for solving my Questions. Pardon me for not reading the manual properly :) (Dunno where it gone now)

So I think my problems are because those spells are priest spells, so my mages are unable to WRITE them. Another question, what do the color of the scrolls mean?

    TQ again!

Off the top of my head (the manual isn't in colour and I can't be bothered to load up a agme and look) the spells are classified roughly like this:

    Red - attack type spells
    Blue - defensive type spells
White - information & neutral type
    Green - protection/priest scrolls

I found a Mental Domination scroll yesterday, and it certainly is a priest scroll.
