If it is such a big income for SP, why remove them?.

I mean, I would have no trouble loading a few pop-ups (even though they rarely load for me :hmm: ) if i knew they helped out.

Because many of the popups recently were problematic - i.e. viruses and other sundries that screw with your computer

[IMG] In the last few months the pop-up provider started infesting them all with self-installing spying/redirecting/dialer filth like Gator and Clarissa, and on top of it all, let trojans and viruses into the system on a regular basis.

So it's nothing against pop-ups per se, just this one provider. But finding another decent pop-up provider for an independent site is like looking for a needle in a haystack, so I'll need some time to come up with one.

Ok, I noticed GAIN coming up every time the pop-ups opened...

Decent people in this world are hard to find :toofar:

Bleh, they won't install through firewall. If they do, change to Mozilla -it's opensource and faster too ;)

(A bit beside the point, but hey...)

Heh.... McAfee caught 5 trojans in less than 12 hours from the popups. Problem is, part of the cleaning process is to delete the file attacked. In this case is was notepad.exe, which I had to reinstall twice. So I'm VERY appreciative of the popup-less site! ;)

The only thing I got was a window on GAIN, but I never had any viruses. Or maby I'm infected and don't know :hmm:  :aaa:

Maybe it's because the pop-ups never loaded proper...

I wasn't too happy about Gator messing up my computer. Sorry to say that I now use my Firewall to stop popups, which fixes the problem.

I use the links here to purchase things whenever I want a book or game or whatnot, so I do what I can to help Tal's finances.

Well, Vyndin, in my case the pop-ups didn't load well either, but that didn't stop the virusses. Luckily my virusscan intercepted them. Maybe you should update yours and do a full sweep of your comp.

Went to the cabin in the mountains, thus my absence.

I've got McAfee with auto-update, so the chances are small that I would have any viruses.

    Gotta love ad-aware though... ;)

Yeah well one solution is the Google toolbar. Not only is searching convenient, but you get a most wonderful thing called a POPUP BLOCKER.

There is a separate program called "Pop-up stopper and ad-killer". Activate that and there will never be a pop-up that will live to tell the story...

But ad-watch works in much the same manner.

[IMG] Just keep in mind that if you run any such apps, you're depriving honest websites whose primary source of income is advertising of even the few cents they could get from you in return for providing a website you enjoy.

I just use it when the pop-ups get annoying, for example when I visit free-xxx-with-naked-woman.com... :hahaerr: eh... wait a minute... I was not supposed to type that!. How does one go about to delete something one has written that was completely not true by any meassure...

But seriously, I have it on when visiting a site that I suspect will have loads of pop-ups, that when you close, will reappear in an annoying manner...

But with SP, I would never do such a thing. X my heart.

[IMG] I have to second everyone on the Gator adware/spyware/evilware program. This is truely the most evil and devious company/software on the Internet.

I use Google's toolbar to block pop-ups. Altavista and MSN also have toolbars.

I think this topic's usefulness has come to and end, as this isn't a discussion on what pop-up stoppers people use.
