Where do you assign Khalid's proficiencies?

It seems to me that there are two ways to go to maximize Khalid's effectiveness in a party:

1)Put all new proficiencies into longbow

2)Put all new proficiencies into large sword.

I don't know which is better, but IMHO, it looks like the archer route might be the better way to go with Khalid. He's less likely to get hurt, which means less panicking, and his STR is lower than his DEX, which means he'll hit more often with a ranged weapon than a melee one.

    Any advice is appreciated.

He's made to be a tank, and that's how I used him. Pretty much any other NPC can be a decent archer, so there's really little point in making him into one as well. Equipping him with the Gauntlets of Ogre Power is a must, however.

Well, actually, I did a little number crunching and if you go the sword route, he is one of the best melee fighters out there. He swings his sword as good as Minsc, or almost and has better ac. This is without items because with items, Minsc ends with the better ac, but Khalid will have the best swordwielding skills. So actually, thanks to the fact Khalid can get to 4 stars in large swords, he is as good a tank as minsc. So that is what I would do as like Tal pointed out, you will have enough other people shooting at the enemy already.

I normally distribute points between Long Swords and Axes, as there is a nice throwing axe in BG, and rarely use the bow, and I can equip a shield with both. Also, I make sure to have Protection from Fear memorised with one of the clerics, because it seems like Khalid's morale fails earlier than the other NPCs when their HP are low.

It depends who else is in your party; though I'd agree that as BG1 is a fairly low - level game his relatively high HP mean he's better off in melee.

I stick it all into large swords. He's buit to swing the 2-handed sword, so that's what I use him for.

[IMG] The only problem with Khalid as a tank, is that tanks don't normally run screaming from battle when they get hurt.

In my current game, Khalid is on the front line, with the +2 sword. Imoen is the archer.
Despite his low morale, certainly due to henpicking, he's one of the best with a sword, while others are better archers (Kivan, Coran).
So I say like the others: go for swords. And the nice axe comes pretty late in the game.

I assign Khalid's proficiency points to same place I assign Khalid: the trash dump. He's the only character I know who panics even when wearing Kiel's helmet. What an idiot. What does she see in him? Reminds me of Aribeth and that wimpy Fenthick. I think they purposefully write ridiculous love interests for the hot female NPCs so that young male gamers can say, "Well, if he got a woman like that, maybe I can too!" I'm surprised Florence Nightingale herself hasn't been written into one of the storylines...

I always try to raise proficiencies somewhat evenly. The biggest bang for the buck is going from one to two stars, the next biggest is from four to five, followed by the two to three star jump. I don't think you can hit five stars in anything in BG, so only go to three (the +1 damage you get going to four is a waste).

Missile weapons rule in BG so three stars there is a good thing (just watch Coran pick off enemies froma distance), then go to three stars in large swords if you can (that +3, +3 is worth it).

I only ever had him run once. I don't know why he's so agitated with everyone else...

I had the man use a sword and shield, because his portrait seems to suggest something along those lines. Thinking about it, though, you'd probably get better power-play if you went with some sort missile weapon with a two-handed weapon as backup.

I decided to have him charge some baddies. Too bad he forgot to wear any armor!

Jaheria will get over him, shortly after I start SoA. ;)

    @T2Bruno
I agree a bit with you though I think the biggest "bang" is from 2 to 3, not 1 to 2. But that's cause I always favor bonus to "to hit" over extra damage or almost anything else. Though I guess you are more in favor to the extra half attack you get, both are debatable.

Now on not being able to achieve five stars, that's not entirely true, though it is strangely enough unfeasalbe with a straigth fighter. To achieve five stars you need to be a (human) fighter who dual-classes to Cleric or Druid at level 3, 6 or 7, with 7 being the best option of course.

This is a little cheesy, in my opinion, but very effective. Put all Khalids points in large sword and then pickpocket Drizzt's scimitar for him and equip him with that and the large+1, +4 vs missile or the large shield+2. He tanks.

I made Khalid's Long Sword proficiency to this [***]
    , this[****] and this[*****](I think I did).
He so totally ROCKED! With Drizzt's Scimitar or Greywolf's Long Sword +2 with a gauntlet of ogre power, He kicked Mulahey's, Bassilus'(correct?) and Sarevok's butt REAL HARD!!!!! Therefore, I recommend adding the Long Sword proficiency.

@Darkslayer_4: Huh? What on earth is that post supposed to mean? I don't get it.

On-Topic: Always used a blade. Mostly sword-and-shield, sometimes Two-handed sword.

Khalid works really well with the World's Edge and bracers of Dexterity IMO so I always stick my points on large sword too. Works wonders. @ Darkslayer, I believe it's impossible for anyone to ever get 5 star proficiency in BG and ToSC. I'm fairly sure you can only get to 4 stars without a hack.
