No config change. No bed usage, desk only. Not battery (same situation without). Not graphical drivers. Memtest okay. No problems discovered by other tests. Disk defragmented. No dust (vacuumed). The other two laptops bought at the same time from the same source don't seem to have such problems.

What could be the cause of overheating and hanging up in such a situation?

It might be useful to install a monitoring program that shows you the temperatures of
CPU, graphics chip and mainboard chip.
That is if it is supported by your mainboard.
I had once a similar problem. The cause was some of the passive cooling elements (these small riffled metal things) weren't glued properly, so they slowly came loose.

Your heatsink is loose or just has dried thermal paste.

Reapply thermal paste and reseat heatsink.

A couple years ago I saw an HP slimline computer that used a lot of laptop components in it start to overheat for no apparent reason. The fan was fine, the heatsink was fine. The power supply was defective. Replacing it fixed the problem.

I suspected the power supply because when I had it open, I noticed that by far the hottest part was the power supply. It seemed that that was where all the heat was coming from.
