[IMG] There are downloadable files in SP, such as the Guide to Druids that are .rar format which I don't seem to be able to open. What application is required to open a .rar file?

.rar's are similar to zipped files but I understand the compression ratio is greater making them more versatile. You can D/L Winrar for free HERE.

RAR files can also be a standalone extracting file...meaning that you don't have to download a program first before you can extract the contents of the file...some of the WeiDU mods for BG2 come as self extracting RAR files. :rolling:

But that goes for Zip archives as well... They can also be made into self-extracting executables.

Anyway Harbourboy, since this is a FAQ, it is, curiously enough, answered in the SP FAQ: http://www.sorcerers.net/Info/FAQ/index.php

"You need to equip the ring." :D

As this is really a SP-related question, I'm moving the thread to SS.

There is such a thing as PowerArchiver that can handle all the formats. I wouldn't bugger with zips, rars, and other stuff like that. ;)

[IMG] As the FAQ says, WinRAR has full support for creation and extraction of RAR and ZIP files (and every other format you are ever likely to encounter), whereas PowerArchives only has read support for RAR files. Since I encourage people to send in RAR archives, PowerArchiver is obviously not a recommended choice.

Why RAR instead of ZIP? AFAIK, ZIP is more common and thus a better choise. :hmm:

IMHO .RAR offers better media (or even overall?) compression.

From the submission guidelines: "Everything you send us should be compressed at the highest level of compression, either in .rar (preferred) or .zip format. We recommend using WinRAR, considering it compresses up to 30% better than WinZip. Smaller files save us space and bandwidth, and mean faster downloads for people downloading files."
