[IMG] I'm confused. I just created a Bounty Hunter to go through the game for the third time and her base THAC0 is 17, she's useless, She can't hit anything. Also, I've read several times that PPL said their Paladins or whatever were at like -12 THAC0.

Somebody please explain THAC0 to me, 'cause it just doesn't make sense. :(

    Thanks,

    Immoral

THAC0 is the base # a character must roll. THAC0 means To Hit Armor Class Zero. In other words, a THAC0 of 18 means you have to roll an 18 to hit armor class zero. If the opponent has an AC of 4, then you'd need to roll a 14 to hit... make sense?

The base THACO is based on character class.

Yes it makes sense and I understand what it takes to hit an AC of whatever. I want to know how the game determines the PC's base THAC0.

I don't get how the base THAC0 of a Bounty Hunter is 17. At that level they're not gonna collect many bounties, or live long for that matter.

THAC0 is based on the characters skills as well as strength and other minor modifications (magical items, etc). I'm not very familiar with the Kits, but is a Bounty Hunter a thief kit? If so, it's using the thief THAC0 for that particular level (I believe we start at 9th level).

A thief THAC0 is not that of a fighter, where it goes down by 1 each level gained. Thieves and Mages have the worst THAC0 gain of any class.

I think, from the DM THAC0 Chart, a thief has his THAC0 go down by 1 every 3 levels, which would make his BASE THAC0 17 while a Mage has their THAC0 reduced by 1 every 4 levels.

Strength modifications can lower this of course. The higher strength a character has, the better his "TO HIT" will become, which is applied to the over all THACO.

If your character has a high strength with let's say, +3, +6, he has a +3 BONUS to his BASE THAC0 and does an extra +6 DAMAGE. If we apply this to the BASE THAC0 of 17, your total would be:

    BASE THAC0: 17 (no modifications)
    CURRENT THACO: 14 (STRENGTH MODIFICATIONS)

    Hope that helps.

    Syl...
