In a completely separate post about role-playing evil, I got off on a tangent about how most people could not actually be adventurers if they lived in Faerun. I stated that it was kind of like being a professional athlete today - only a very small percentage of the population would have the physical or mental skills necessary, and then given that the life span of a newbie adventurer can't be that long, many poeple wouldn't do it even if they had the ability

So, I got to thinking what my real life stats would be if I were in a AD&D (2nd edition to equate it to BGII) world. Here's what I came up with.

Feel free to comment and include your own, keeping in mind that 10 is the human average. Also keep in mind that anything over 15 is truly exceptional, and anything around 17 or 18 is probably significantly higher that anyone here has (you have to have a really good reason if you make a claim like that). Almost all of your scores should fall between the range of 6-14, and if you have an average of more than about 11, you probably have an inflated image of yourself.

Here's what I came up with, and I concluded I'd make a pretty lousy adventurer (at least statistically speaking):

I went to an encumberance table to try and calculate my strength and I had to guess at a few of the other statistics, so here's a guess at what I believe my stats would look like:

    Str: 15
    Int: 15
    Wis: 6
    Dex: 8
    Con: 10
    Cha: 9

    Explanations:

Stength - OK, I work out. I bench press well over 200 pounds - if you want to be exact 225 pounds - and that's a strength of about 15. So people who have characters with 18 strength, these guys are really, really strong.

Intelliegence - I stand by this even though many people would think that's really high - I'm a Mensan, so I think that puts me at least in the 140's in terms of IQ.

Wisdom - I have absolutely no common sense. I can't see how things work mechanically, so I'm definitely not mechanically inclined, and I'm not handy with any types of tools.

    Dexterity - I'm a little clumsy, so I'd guess I'm a little below average

Constitution - I have no idea how I'd measure this on myself - I put in 10 because it's the average. I don't know how to judge this other than by how often you get sick. Since for me that's no more or less than anyone else, I'll go with average.

Charisma - I really don't have much in the way of personal magnetism. I've never been elected for anything, and I tend not to go out of way to be overly sociable. I can certainly see a score of 8 or 9 for myself, but no lower than that.

So, if you take the average, it's 10.5 - and since I'm a typical person, it should be right around 10. If I lived in Faerun, what would I be? Maybe a fighter, maybe a mage (although I don't think I have the stats to be a specialist), but either way, I'd make for a pretty lousy mage and a pretty lousy fighter. If I were playing the game, and I found me there as an NPC, I'd leave me behind.

I'm no weakling, but I'm no muscle man either. I simply can't be bothered to work out.

    Intelligence: 16
I'm one smart cookie (IQ 155).

    Wisdom: 13
I have good willpower and learn well from experience.

    Dexterity: 9
I've never been hugely agile and I can't say that I have the world's best co-ordination either.

    Constitution: 11
I'm not terribly fit, but I almost never get ill and can hold my drink pretty well too.

    Charisma: 9
I'm well enough liked by the people who know me, but I'm by no means a social person and I don't mix well.

Average: 11.3 (mainly due to high intelligence). I'd make a halfway decent mage.

Chris, you're one smart cookie. I have never had my IQ measured, but I'm a Mensan, so it has to be pretty high. Are you a fellow Mensan?

Sorry, I know this is a bit :yot:

Question: is anybody really going to post something like the following?

    Intelligence: 8
    I'm a total dunce.

    @ Chris

Quite possibly. I freely admit to have a complete lack of common sense and gave myself a wisdom of 6. I also admit to being clumsy and gave myself a dexterity of 8.

Keep in mind that an intelligence of 8 in 2nd edition is not as bad as 3rd edition. Minsc has an intelligence of about 8, and while I do not claim he is a smart fellow, he's functional.

Well I would have to say

Str - 9 - I have not done any weight lifting since grade nine gym class and while my work does occassionally involve lugging around somewhat heavy sets of client records I most definitely lack any signs of bulging biceps. On the other hand I am certainly not the Charles Atlas - 98 lb weaking.

Int - 15 - I was either at the top of my classes or near the top consistently in academic subjects during high school and university, received various scholorships and awards, placed first in the province in an academic contest and 20th on my professional exams. Still, I make no claims to being Einstein.

Wis - 12 - I have my little quirks and I can be a stuborn at times but in most situations I tend to be the voice of reason.

Dex - 7 - I am definitely not agile. When I used to play baseball with my friends I was the guy who would sometimes drop routine fly balls. I sometimes get frustrated trying to work with small computer screws etc.

Con - 11 - While I do catch colds it has been many years since any illness has slowed me down or caused me to miss even a day of work or school. I can generally get by on very little sleep and when necessary I have no problem working 10 hours a day, seven days a week, for two months straight. I am also have pretty good endurance in terms of walking. However, I am carrying around some extra kilos and I do tend to get out of breath when I sprint.

Ch - 9 - I am somewhat shy in social settings. I am generally fine once I have met people but if I am thrown into a room with a bunch of strangers I am most likely to be the guy standing in the corner and listening to what everyone else is saying. On the job I have no such problems and am often the one who is sent to deal with potentially hostile people.

That would put my average at 10.5. If I were a D&D character I might be able to survive a while as a mage provided that I had a nice bunch of meat shield fighter types to prevent me from actually getting within hand to hand combat range. Still, as a player I would probably take one look at those stats and promptly hit the reroll button.

    [IMG] Funny thread. Here goes...

Strength: 9 (might even be 10)
Cant say for sure, cause some 13 years have passed by since my last physical confrontation with unruly fellows (see charisma below lol) and since I dont do sports.

    Dexterity: 14
I am oh so nimble. No tripping & slipping and my hand/eye-coordination is quite good. As are my reflexes.

    Constitution: 13
Other than a cold I dont get ill. And I can dance all night long and then some. Furthermore, Vodka & Co. is no terror for me. The only means by which I can measure my con, you see. :D

    Intelligence: 11
I get what people try to tell me - most of the time...

    Wisdom: 8
My existence and the entire world confuse me greatly. I have got questions and doubts aplenty, but nothing to answer them.

    Charisma: 14
People always start chatting with me (got fire?; how do I get to "something"?; wheres the next hospital? is this seat taken? want a cigarette? - it can be annoying, really). I also get into the club of my choice and can avoid trouble with brutes. Makes me think that I am not a very repellant person. ;)

11,5. Hmm. Maybe I am a bit full of myself!?
I think I would make a passable bard or thief.

    Cha: 10

Strength - I am a total weakling, I might be stronger if I was allowed to carry stuff around and if I was able to excersize more. But as it is... I'm weak :p

Intelligence - Probably a bit high, but I dunno, I am too logical for my own good and got 130 on an IQ test two years ago, I don't know what it is now though.

Wisdom - I have no common sense and am rather naive. I suppose it might be a bit high.

Dexterity - I can pick pockets well (don't ask) and can be quite quick when I need to be. I can get around rocky areas and stuff quite well.

Constitution - I don't get ill that often and can take my drink, but because of the weakness that effects strength, it's less than average.

Charisma - I can be persuasive and bluff and all that quite well, but my appearence and talking let me down. But they balance out.

    Str:7 I am a 115 lb, 5'10" weakling.

Dex:13 I am fairly nimble, but not anything extraordinary

Con:12 Slightly above average, don't get sick much, and can hold a fair amount of drink for my weight.

Int:12 I am above average, IQ is around 145 or so.

Wis:14 I have a good will-power, and have very good common sense. In fact I think more of my IQ is to common sense that acual intelligence

Chr:10 I get along with people that I know, but don't go out of my way to meet people. So average.

Str - 12 - I'm above average, but I'm actually very ill, so this is actually a dropped score (I used to be a very strong swimmer, 3 1/2 hours a week, illness stopped that).

Dex - 14 - I am have very quick hands ( ;) ) and tend to catch things I barely notice falling. Added to that I am a quick guitarist.

Con - 12 - Unfortuneately, I'm very ill, as I've said, but still manage to run two miles nearly everyday.

Wis - 8 - I am not wise in any shape, way or form.

Int - 11 - I'm average in the brains dept.

    Cha - 11 - Although shy, I am a dashingly handsome rogue ;) .

We got some smart poeple playing this game! WOW! The majority of people are saying they have IQ's in excess of 130 - putting you well within the top 10% of the population, maybe the top 5% of the population!

I have to change my strength score, as it is currently 14. I just saw that Nalia has a 14 in strength - she can't bench 225 pounds... OK, anything beyond 16 though is truly exceptional, so I won't go beyond that...

Given some of the questions I am asked on a day to day basis I often think that most of the people here would easily qualify for the top ten percent in intelligence. I have generally found that most RPG players are above average in intelligence. I don't know if this is due to the rules being too difficult for less intelligent people to comprehend or if it just because most of my RPG playing friends were people whom I met in school.

The thing that instantly comes to mind when I read your quote is something that one of my friends at University said while being faced with yet another example of our classmates' stupidity -

"If this is the cream of the crop I would hate to see the rest!"

Good thread! I'll have a go at this one...

STR: 10. While I'm no weakling, I'm not above average either.

DEX: 11. I'm not excessivly mobile, but i can move quite good despite my relative obesity... :p

CON: I'll be nice to myself and give myself a 12.
I can take a few punches if I want to, rarely get sick, I could walk kinda long if I wanted, and so on.

INT: 14. I (and most people i know) think I am kinda smart. I'm great at the real "intellect" subjects at school too so... 14 it is.

WIS: Real toughie. I'll go for an 11 because I think i am slightly, but not much, above the average in whatever wisdom determines too.

CHA: 6. I don't look good. I'm overweight. I can't... uhh... do whatever charisma does.

AVG: 10 and two-thirds. No comments.

What class i would be: probably a commoner or merchant  OH, adventuring class, eh? Well, considering my highest is INT, mage would be attractive. But I'll go with Sorcerer since they actually have no primary stat :D

You know, that is something I have been thinking about for a quite long time. The only problem is that the adventures on Faerun had as the main goal pursuing their 'class'. Their lives depend on it. We poor people from this world have other things to do :( .

It reminds me of the times, when I was young (and innocent :D ) student. Nothing really important to do, no responsibilities ... time to make 4x pro week 3 hours of martial arts training, or make 10km trip up the river in a kayak.
Now I am old, poor IT consultant :coffee: spending my time behind the screen, trying to feed my family. Even that I am trying to work out regularly, and making my 200 push-ups every morning, my current shape is only shadow of the 'former glory' :wail: .

Ok - so the stats :

STR 15 (bench press 110kg = cca 240pounds, regular workout)
DEX 13 (it was much better, but that were the times :) )
CON 11 (198cm/100kg, never had any serious health problems, quite good endurance)
INT 12 (is it enough for an IT consultant ? :D )
    WIS 12
CHAR 10 (it is hard to decide - so let's take average)

@ Hassassin - You are a rare creature if you are working as an IT consultant and have a wisdom of 12. ;)

I have always thought that it is a prerequisite for consultants to have wisdom no higher than 7 or so. Of course the executives who hire consultants are the ones who deserve the really low wisdom scores but my experience with big business has led me to believe that with a few rare exceptions executive tend not to rate a wisdom score above 5. :D

    Str - 8 - I'm short and thin
    Dex - 13 - I'm short and thin :D
Con - 11 - if the frequency of illness is the criteria, a little better than average
Int - 13 - never been tested, but I was always in the top 20-25% of my classes.
    Wis - 10 - average
Cha - 11 - tough one to answer. I don't really make a good first impression (based mainly on appearance), but people like me once they get to know me.

Average - 11. Sounds about right.

So basically, at best, I'd be a crappy thief or a crappy mage, or an OK sorcerer. I guess when I said I like to roleplay myself, I actually meant I like to roleplay a substantially upgraded version :shake:

    @JSBB

You know, I am the 'basement' type of the consultant = the one hidden from the customers. (Actually a software engineer, even that my business card states consultant). But I manage to survive in a branch of an american IT company, getting a raise every year, so i claim my INT / WIS being at least 12 :D .
The other possibility is, that my CHAR is so high, that they will not fire me, even that my INT / WIS is unsuitable.
The third possibility is, that it has something to do with the fact, that my boss is about 30cm smaller, 50kg lighter, and knows about my obsession with weapons  .

Ok, I know that it's off topic ... just could not help myself :D .

As a comment on RPG'ers, we're a rather sorry lot (looking at the results thus far).

Dendri is a bit of a social butterly, and Hassassin can pump iron with me any time he wants, but other than that we're a bunch of weakling, intelligent, introverts.

Come to think of it, the picture that most represents me (of the portraits in BGI and II) is the oafish looking fighter guy with the bald head and goatee from BGI that corresponded to absolutely NONE of the 30 or so NPC's in BGI. That's a telling point right there.

My bio - Aldeth is not only a foppish idiot but corresponds to a nameless soul of BGI. *sigh*

@Neeraj - hmmm... that's an average of over 12 even giving yourself a 3 in charisma, and 4 out of your six stats are considered exceptional... I tend to think not...

I think that if i were to rate myself i would probably be the exact opposite stats as Aldeth.
I say this due to the fact that i cant bench much. I am good with tools. I do not have a extremely high IQ. Im not clumsy at all. I would probably fall at a 7 for charisma and constitution i wouldnt know how to measure.
