Well, I'm now a Godfather

    Yeah, a friend of mine whose pretty much been like a brother since we met in like Grade 10, 6 or 7 years ago, and I lived with him and his family for two year while we played hockey together has become a father.

    With that I've become a Godfather, it's a little weird seeing how we're both 21 and believe that nothing will happen to us, but his wife told us that I will be taking care of her and the baby girl if something happens to Carl.

    Hmm, I am a Godfather two times over, once for my niece and the other for my youngest sister. It is more of a traditional thing nowadays and I have no intention of fulfilling my obligations if it can be avoided. I think anything but me would be better for the girls.

    Though she may believe this, becoming a godfather has nothing to do with accepting such responsibility.

    A godfather's responsibility is to sponsor the child for baptism. Which essentially means you take on the responsibility for the child's religious education and spiritual welfare.

    You have no responsibility for the mother at all, and essentially no secular responsibility for the child. And as long as the parents are handling the religious side of things, you really have nothing to do under your spiritual responsibilities unless you want to.

    So, being asked to be a godfather is really more of an honorary thing than anything else.

    I don't know if their are maybe different traditions in different countries concerning "godfatherdom", but given that religion has something "international" to it, I can't think that's likely, excpect there are different customs in different religous flavours. Anyway, if your a "godfather" here, your expected to take care for the child, should anything happen to the parents. While the parents are still save, sound and well, you are expected to have contact to the child and making some presents. Or at least, I excpected my godfather to give me some nice things and he didn't let me down.

    Anyway, congratulations.

    I've always seen being a "godfather" as being like an honorary uncle. Very cool. I think the traditional aspect of it depends on your religion and family, but for the most part I think that's how you should take it, honorary uncle. Congrats.

    Iago - Well, all I can say is that expectations and responsibilities are two different things.

    DR - Hehe. Well if that's the case, then I'm both the honorary and real uncle to both my brother's daughters :)

    Yeah I made a mistake there, if anything happens to both Carl and Nicole then it falls to me.

    But still I'm quite honoured by it, I mean out of anyone they could've chosen, like her brothers, his brother and so on, they chose me.

    It does help that both Carls and Nicoles parents are in their 60's.

    Oh i've seen a few married women that are classed as hotties though i'm sure there is another name for them ;)

    They tend to age between 20 and 30ish me thinks
